In the UK, we are mainly concerned with two types of electric bikes:
Pedelecs are electric bikes whereby the electric motor provides assistance to the rider only when they are pedalling.
E-bikes do not require the pedals to be turning (in fact an e-bike doesn't have pedals), the rider using a throttle to control the speed.
Just to confuse matters, many pedelecs in the UK can also be ridden in e-bike mode, often by a switch on the handlebars.
