The Djavelo (Diavelo) electric bike was announced at the beginning of 2006 with a futuristic specification:
16.4 kg weight Shaft Drive 40-60 mile from a Lithium Polymer battery 400W motor £999
and listed on the UK site, Powerscoots. After missing the launch date early in the year, the bike has since been listed as 'unavailable until further notice'.
However, Schwinn Bikes in the USA have recently launched a new range of electric bikes including the 2007 Continental:
Upon first glance, the two bikes look almost identical. A to B magazine suspected in a recent issue that perhaps the bike hadn't been invented yet. So perhaps it looks like the bike does exist after all. Powerscoots are quoting the bike is in production although the motor will probably have to be different from the quoted 400w to comply with UK regulations.

This is true. Diavelo was founded on the 10th of April 2006 by two Danes, Brian Hoehl and Lars Munksoe.
Schwinn, have lept in and bought the rights to distribute the Diavelo under their own name in the US.
Obviously European engineering is leading the world in this arena... at least in theory, I don't know anyone that has tried one yet.

I live in the US. I had looked at the Schwinn web-site. Did not find it there. Perhaps because I am mentally slow and do not understand complex web-sites. Anyway, you solved the mystery. And you answered all my questions Li-Polymer, shaft drive, hub-7-(?)speed AND you had the weight (very high). Thank you, thank you..

More information on how the Schwinn compares to the eZee Torq here, including what will happen with the international version. Both took part in a ride between Melbourne and Sydney last month.

There are a couple of major differences between the original Djiavleo and the Schwinn versions. Namely the latter has a 24 volt motor system and 8- 10 Ahr battery whilst the former was 36 volt and 15 Ahr. Why the change?? I do not know, but the difference in hill climbing is considerable.

the reason is probably price, its cheaper to make in this lower version.
