In a thread on the slime that's inserted into tubes, the great majority view was that they don't work.

Well designed puncture resistant tyres and practice at repairing punctures quickly are the best options.

I called Halfords this morning to see if I would have trouble taking them back, they may not believe that something sold to prevent punctures can cause them. Thankfully the cycle shop manager said it wouldn't be a problem, the answer was so quick that I'm wondering if it's a common complaint.

What the correct psi of the Marathon plus tyres on my Pro Connect?

It's anywhere in the min/max range shown on the tyre wall, depending on speed versus comfort choice. That's the range of pressures where handling is completely safe and there's no risk of sudden failure or tyrewall damage.

I use 65 psi in the back and 55 psi in the front, largely to suit comfort.

I treat 80 psi as a limit, but I got this figure from a technical document for the Mavic A319 rim that I use on my Torq, also fitted with Schwalbe M+ 700x38 tyres.

Looking again at the data for the Mavic rim (which is likely to be quite similar to the Shimano rim), it says:

Recommended Maximum Tyre Pressures:
Tyre Width psi
28 103
30 103
32 103
35 88
37 88
40 82

Both the Shimano rim on the ProConnect and the Mavic rim are 622 x 19 mm.

One of the wheel technical guys will correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that the forces on the rim from the tyre pressure increase considerably when the tyre is getting significantly wider than the rim, and this occurs at a tyre width of 35 mm in the chart above.

Certainly, if a lower figure is stated on the tyre itself, then stick to that.

My Marathon Racers say 45 - 85 psi, and as I am over the 75Kg weight, plus carry gear I generally go to the 85psi in my 28" ones.

I hope they dont take the french chalk out! I use it every time I mend a puncture. I just scrape it with a pocket knife I carry as part of my travelling tool kit and wipe the powder over the repair. It stops the uncovered glue sticking to the inside of the tyre.
