Hi
My name is Mel, i live in Somerset. I found this forum after trying to get more information about E-bikes. I have been regularly tuning in trying to learn more about DIY electric bikes.
I cycle to work through wind and rain everyday (especially this summer!) .It's actually only a couple of miles, so i guess i don't really need to add any motor to my bike as i figured i'm pretty fit enough to make that journey. But i am intrigued by powered bikes and like the idea of increasing the range of my cycling ability by converting my trusty mountain bike with a hub motor.
This is all new to me and i have plenty of questions, so i thought i'd better register and get to know you all.
So, good evening.....

Welcome to the forum Mel, we've a number of active and knowledgeable members in Somerset, so by all means post your questions in this forum and you should get appropriate advice.
There's an electric bike challenge event planned for September 14th including parts of the Tour of Britain route in your area.

I've been lurking on this site for some time now, trying to learn more about pedelec bikes, which are a rarity in the U.S (I live in California). I'm a cyclist looking for an electric bike to commute on (7 miles with a long, steep hill upon which my office perches) and use for errands.
I looked at the Giant Twist now being offered briefly here, but it has only two sizes that don't fit well. Now I've noticed that 50 Cycles will ship to the US and I'm considering a Kalkhoff, but feel a bit worried about choosing a correct size.
Would any of the Kalkhoff owners here post the stand-over heights of their bikes and any other dimensions you care to measure? I would appreciate it so much. My leg length is 30.5 inches.
I posted this question elsewhere on the site and hope people don't find that too bothersome.
Thanks,
Erica from California

Welcome to the forum Erica, please don't apologise for the double posting.
The forum is always a little quiet over the weekend, but I'm sure some Kalkhoff Pro Connect and crossbar Agattu owners will check their crossbar heights for you in due course.

Really dislike using the tube so I took the plunge and bought a Wisper 905se today! I test rode it and it was amazing. I pick it up on Tuesday.
I have a loads of questions about it but I will post those in the general section..
Looking forward to being a part of this exciting community!

Hi,
My home is Kamloops, B.C. Canada.
Decided on the eZee Quando II folding ebikes. Needed a light, folding bike to carry on a travel trailer or caravan as it is called in England. Attempting to make the portable home more self-sufficient with the installation of a serious solar system on the trailer - the idea of charging the Quando ebikes off of solar power is great fun. Now that is re-cycling - pun intended.
This is our first foray into electric biking. (we will pick them up from the dealer in a couple of weeks in Victoria, BC - no dealer here.) Have always used a traditional mountain style bike. Our last long trip had them pretty beaten up from the bouncing and exposure to the weather. They were also a pain to hang on their rear carrying post and strap and make sure they stayed tightly strapped on. The Quando's will be folded and placed into their own new compartments safe from weather, road hazards and thieves.
Quick thanks to Flecc for his excellent eZee Q bike series and for all his knowledge and posts on this forum.

Thanks Rod, appreciated. Welcome to the forum, I'm sure you'll enjoy the Quando II bikes, easily the fastest and most powerful of the e-folders. With the single gear you won't catch up with the speed by pedalling much of the time, but that will make life much easier than on the mountain bikes, more relaxing for you to look around you while riding.
Keep us informed on your solar charging experiences. We have some members who use solar with their caravans, though some years our weather doesn't make it very productive.

Hi, I'm in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.
I've been studying this site for a few weeks now and have just got hold of a Quando. It looks clean but no handbook (ordered one from a very nice lady in Brighton), NiMH battery with 'Sprint Spare' written on the bottom and 26 miles on the computer. Tried to discharge the battery today. I stood the bike stand on a brick, weighted the front & tied the throttle open with garden string. It was still going strong after about 5 hours so I went out for my first spin. Did four miles which took it into the red. I've now recharged the battery.
Did I do right?
(The ride reminds me of the moped I had in 1968.)

Hi BertYardBrush, welcome to the forum. Yes, that's fine, you won't have done any harm, but it's not worth trying discharging that way since with no load on the motor it will run for many hours on not much battery. Discharging by riding on the road is very much quicker, especially if sticking to hill climbing.
Is it a Li-ion battery or NiMh? If you aren't sure, it should say on the charger whether it's for Li-ion or NiMh. I'm asking because they need to be treated in different ways to get the best out of them.
The Quando is very moped like with it's powerful motor and little need for pedalling.
