Default Synergie Shamal Owner Reviews

Reviewer: Mark Haydock

Purchased From: Cyclone Bikes Ltd, Fife

Purchase Price: £299

Time Owned: 2 Months

Local Terrain: Very Hilly

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Strengths:
Well-built, with some decent Shimano components, and has proved reliable so far. Light weight for an e-bike (22kg gross, 18kg without battery). Compact and folds easily, so can be carried in a car, train or bus for an integrated transport solution. Well and sensibly equipped for the price, with full mudguards, kickstand, rear carrier rack, etc. Flexibility of power modes: variable pedal assistance, which can be boosted using the motorcycle-style throttle; motor power alone; or pedalling alone (a viable option when the battery is exhausted). Cruises comfortably at over 15mph on flat roads, and at least 20mph on gentle downhill sections. Solid hill-climbing performance: will climb a 1 in 10 gradient on motor power alone (assuming a fully-charged battery), and with moderate pedal assistance will easily cope with long continuous "drags" and short, sharp inclines of up to 1 in 8. Reasonable range in pedal assist mode, averaging 20 miles, and up to 25 miles is achievable in favourable conditions. Comfortable and relaxing to ride. Looks stylish with its neat, well-balanced, proportions and silver aluminium finish. Brilliant value for money.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Weaknesses:
Maximum speed is restricted by the relatively low gearing and smallish (20inch) wheels. Would benefit from a higher top gear to raise cruising speed. Motor power tails off noticeably after about 15 miles as the battery is partially discharged, which slows your progress. Springy, torque-sensing, pedal cranks are initially disconcerting. Inadequate instructions supplied contain little specific information about the Shamal.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Summary:
An ideal starter e-bike and a joy to own and use. A thoughtful and practical design for its intended purposes: urban commuting, shopping and short-distance excursions into the countryside, though speed merchants should look elsewhere! Highly recommended.
