It's frustrating to hear that Lady Flangewhistle, (the one who succeeded Baroness Fuckertyspunktrumpet in leading the Government's investigation into child abuse by MPs) finds herself accused of being a "biased establishment figure." How do people expect the outcome of the inquiry to be pre-determined unless such people are appointed to lead it? I just wish they would get on with the process and publish the outcome so that we can all resume trusting and serving our MPs. Otherwise, when campaigning for the General Election starts and MPs do the traditional baby kissing, it might start to look a bit sinister.

Dear Sir.

Your aspersions are unfounded and unwarranted. Lady Flangewhistle is a respected lawyer, the current Lord Mayor of London, and a Tory member of the House of Lords. She is of course a friend of many prominent people which is hardly surprising given her role in public life. But this in no way disqualifies her from carrying out her duties in a proper and impartial manner.

The fact that she is also a friend and neighbour of Lord Britton who it is alleged was less than punctilious in passing on the dossier alleging child abuse by members of the establishment in care homes, and whose actions are in part a subject of the inquiry, is not a matter which should concern a reasonable member of the public.

She will conduct a careful and in depth inquiry, and will then clear anyone who is in or has been in high office of any blame whatsoever. Which is as it should be.

Anne Widdecombe.
