I am getting a new Kalkhoff sahel compact. It has hub gears which I have never had on a bike before. Can anyone tell me if a bike with hub gears needs a chainstay protector. All advice will be gratefully received.

No chain stay protector needed.

Your new bike has only one sprocket at the back and one ring at the front, so the chain is a simple run around those two cogs.

Chain stay protectors are only needed with multi-sprocket deraileur systems in which the chain is much longer and can slap against the stay.
