driverless taxis are more like car share than current taxis. You don't need to locate the nearest shared car, don't have to go and get them. Just tell a car share company where and when you want it and hop in and hop off. The running cost would be low because it does not employ humans.
And where would my Windsurf kit go and would he let me drive..
And what about when I think" Hang on a minute, I want to pop to the jewelers ( or what ever) in other side of town to pick up or look at something else...swap my car share fir the day.
People want more flexibility. Hop on, hop off trains, travelators etc etc...but making the car fit a way of working it wasn't designed for will not work.
Park car up out of town. Use travelators etc etc. Not taxis and car share.

Taxis cant work for us all, especially on longer journeys.
By nature they are inefficient, driving to a place for a pick up is dead money for driver and wasted fuel and takes up a place that could be utilised by a valid journey.
Doubly so. I call for a taxi and it has an empty trip to get to me. Then at the other end it has an empty trip to get back to base or to where there are fare prospects. Most of their mileage, as much as two thirds, isn't on useful journeys, all of my private car mileage is.

Taxis increase the number of vehicles actually running on the roads and increase the total mileage. Private cars only would minimize both.

What are you talking about? We are not planning to put tariffs on anybody. Especially not S. Africa who say they want a free trade agreement with us. Right now they can produce - AND DELIVER - perfectly good oranges (some might even say better) - FOR LESS MONEY.

Why is this so f***ing hard? 2+2=4. Look it up.
Ok, so I did a bit of research... I looked it up.

XE Currency Converter: ZAR to EUR
6.04 ZAR =0.405040EUR

That number is important. Because (and yes I'm afraid I've not emailed anyone I know in SA or Spain to check) but looking at a well known comparison site, that is normally pretty accurate.

Price in SA for oranges - 6.04r for .3kg

https://www.numbeo.com/food-prices/country_result.jsp?country=South+Africa

Compared to Spain, where they are .36€

https://www.numbeo.com/food-prices/country_result.jsp?country=Spain

So guess what a little bit of research shows.

Oranges are cheaper in Spain than they are in South Africa.

So next question is, is it cheaper / easier to get them to the UK from Spain or the bottom end of Africa.

Off topic, but significant. the Americans have moved their interest from the "War on terror" to starting "Cold War 2" today.

Claiming that their Military and technical superiority over a resurgent Russia and Burgeoning China has become eroded, and they need to spend more on their military potential.

Dangerous to us all.

Seems South African Oranges grow dangerous pips.

Are criminals planting nail-riddled oranges on South African roads to hijack motorists? Africa Check followed the trail.

If potholes and rocks weren’t enough, South African motorists are now being urged to avoid driving over oranges.

Arrive Alive recently tweeted an image of oranges riddled with nails.

The road safety organisation advised motorists to “avoid driving over oranges on [a] road or motorway” as it may be a “possible tactic of criminals”.

Spanish just throw bricks under your car...
Gives a whole new meaning to spiked orange juice, but wouldn't the oranges roll into gutter ? Who drives over oranges anyway ???

I agree he,s an idiot but keeping superpowers balanced in military power has probably kept WW3 at bay. Let USA spend as much as it likes on arms. It keeps all wheels turning..

Environment Secretary Michael Gove has been asked to attend a meeting of the European Commission in Brussels, to explain why the UK still breaches legal air pollution limits.

Britain is one of the five member states that have received a “final warning” from the commission after persistently surpassing limits for nitrogen dioxide levels.

The meeting which is set to take place at the end of the month, will be an opportunity for Mr Gove and other European politicians to discuss air quality and how to protect “a basic quality of life” for European citizens.
Experts have estimated air pollution kills 50,000 people annually in the UK alone.

Last year the nation was warned it would face a European Court of Justice case if the nitrogen dioxide problem was not dealt with.

Of course after Brexit we can feel free to pollute and be damned, no doubt a case of the "Goodness will flow"
Regaining Sovereignty is a great "get out of jail free" card for an incompetent administration, isn't it?
It's actually another word for shirking and dodging responsibility.

Its a little bit rich this one OG when you consider the biggest contributor towards N02 are the German diesel cars ...the same ones that put cheat software into cars. ( Car goes into clean mode if steering and or brakes are not used...ie) when its been tested)

But we should all be helping Chinese pollute the atmosphere, they are struggling to get it toxic for us all by 2020. Yes, I know they,ve signed up...but doin feck all else.

Sorry but that is nonsense, just wishful thinking. arms build up's preceded both world wars through raising tensions, and we were simply lucky during the first cold war that the Russians were bluffing about their Military potential.

You have to ask if they are already more powerful than America, what is stopping them from attacking anyway?
The simple answer is that they have had and will have no good reason to do so.
This is American propaganda, nothing more and nothing less, they are losing influence as the world's number one "Bully Boy"

Now they have a loud mouthed idiot in charge, they want to get a bigger stick to frighten people with.
Time they grew up before they start something they can't finish.

The only thing that's rich is that we our Government knew all along about the diesel emissions but the Co2 figures gave out Government a "Get out of jail free card"
So they covered the information up
From the Guardian
"
Government is letting VW off the hook over emissions scandal, say MPs
Although 1.2m UK diesel cars were affected by Volkswagen’s defeat devices, ‘little action’ has been taken by regulators, report finds
A lack of determination by the government to hold Volkswagen to account may allow the car manufacturer get away with cheating emissions tests in Europe, MPs have warned.

In a scathing report, the transport select committee said the Department for Transport had been far too slow and ambivalent over taking any action in the wake of the diesel emissions scandal, while industry regulators had “shown little interest” in whether the law had been broken.
And I would point out that most of the pollution comes from far more serious sources than the VW cars

You might have a point, trouble is there is no actual way of knowing.

But, just to correct you. Yes, first world war was preceeded with massive arms build up. The second was not. Germany was building military power secretly and we were running ours down. France was putting all its faith in Maginot line..
Had France/ UK etc actually kept pace WW2 may never have happened.

And what's your point ? If we relied totally on taxis there would have to be more journeys and if we didn't want delays ( waiting for one) more cars actually on the road at any one time, rather than parked up.
Taxi , even with best logistics available, must do empty journeys. As long as we are happy and capable of parking cars up, to get the fewest cars actually on the road ( at any particular time) we,d be better off with no taxis..
Taxis cant work for us all, especially on longer journeys.
By nature they are inefficient, driving to a place for a pick up is dead money for driver and wasted fuel and takes up a place that could be utilised by a valid journey.( even if its driver less)
Public transport should be about efficiency. In South Yorkshire we had subsidised public transport ( buses) for years. It was terribly inefficient . Most trips buses were empty, then at high demand..packed full. Used to amaze me to see a double decker bus driving into town with a sole old lady aboard going shopping. It was another socialist dream. ( Ironmonger's I believe)
Taxi is only marginally better.
.. it depends on what you want to optimise. Public transport is about service not efficiency. Part of the problem, now to a certain extent alliviated by Flexi hours is that if everyone is going places at fixed times, there is congestion at fixed times...
Public service vehicles including taxis, reduces the number of vehicles in circulation. Less parking, Les metal used, less energy in manufacturing, less concrete used for roads, drives and garages, more disposal income, more personal inconvenience.maybe, less car related employment.

Rubbish! the Germans did exactly what America is now doing, trying to establish a technical and material superiority which would not have been stopped by anything we could have done.
