    Battery Conditioning

That's a point I raised a few months ago, and it still bothers me.... I was looking for a replacement battery for a bike which is now four and a half years old. The genuine article is still available so no problem there, it's just that there's no way of knowing how long it might have been 'in...

    Insurance

Not just ebikes - a friend of mine has a Felt AR1 roadie which cost around nine grand - his insurance quote from CycleGuard was around £900 a year. This was for a bike which would only be outside the house when being ridden. He didn't take that up, needless to say. Rog.

    Insurance

This comes up from time to time - decent bike insurance seems to start at around 10% of the retail value of the bike - and that might not include third-party liability either. At first sight it does seem steep, but as you may have unconsciously realized, theft of bicycles is a serious risk -...

Article on BBC Web site about electric bikes

I think I spotted it just under the soapbox.... Seriously - nicely written! Rog.

    Kalkhoff battery problem

Interesting - thanks for that. Perhaps I'll be able to offer more info in about five years time - assuming the battery in mine doesn't last longer than I... Anyway, so far all is well with the five lights. I'm willing to bet that Kalkhoff have cause to regret supplying that 'feature' as it...

    Kalkhoff battery problem

I'm totally puzzled about how those five LEDs can possibly do what is advertised. I don't mean the first short push which gives you the state of charge - I mean the long push which is somehow supposed to indicate the remaining total capacity of the battery. As far as I know there's only one...

    Pedelecs getting attacked again?

I can confirm that all now appears to be well. Rog.

    Pedelecs getting attacked again?

Yes, I go along with that. I'm posting from a Nexus 10 (Android 4.2.2) and nothing is amiss on Firefox here. Also in Firefox in Linux - no problem there either. These browser exploits are not really viruses, and although this one seems to attack only Windows machines you are not guaranteed to...

    Pedelecs getting attacked again?

I didn't say that - what happens here is that a 'Java update' panel pops up, but it isn't in the usual format and the URL appears to be bogus (as quoted in the earlier posts by others). It also brings up the Java console. Kaspersky blocks it so it can't install. It is still trying each time I...

    Pedelecs getting attacked again?

It appears to be a 'rogue' version of Java which is attempting to install via the Pedelecs website. This is NOT from Oracle and I suspect if it is installed your browser will be compromised. Kaspersky thinks it's a phishing app - probably it will capture passwords, etc. Rog.

    Kaspersky does something similar.... Rog.

Manchester Cycle Ride - ebikes not allowed. - what are your thoughts?

That's exactly my opinion too. I have two motorbikes (one here, one in foreign parts) and so if speed is what I'm after I can do that.... The Kalkhoff Sahel Pro never fails to impress me. Not cheap, but of excellent design quality. I also use it for exercise and the fun of riding - I don't...

Manchester Cycle Ride - ebikes not allowed. - what are your thoughts?

Not a problem! Actually it's the organizers who have the real dilemma here, and IMO they have done the only thing they could do. Let's hope that banning us from public riding events doesn't become universal. We need to jealously guard the definition of 'bicycle' which opens lots of doors. I...

Manchester Cycle Ride - ebikes not allowed. - what are your thoughts?

I have to heartily disagree with that. If the event is being run on public roads or indeed on non-public roads to which the public nevertheless have access it's clearly implicit that only road-legal e-bikes can be used. Nanny state or not, we have a valuable 'concession' in being allowed to ride...

    Hub gears and chain tension

Thanks for that, Flecc. A step in the wrong direction, in my humble opinion, though I'm sure their design engineers are far better paid than I am, and therefore they must be right! Rog.

Manchester Cycle Ride - ebikes not allowed. - what are your thoughts?

I think there's a fair chance that the 'incident' alluded to might well be in respect of an e-bike which was, shall we say, generously specified in the power and speed department. If every e-bike rider had been riding a bike which was not assisted beyond the 'legal' 15mph (ish) no bike would...

    Hub gears and chain tension

I suspect this 'problem' has been dealt with on the later models - certainly my Kalkhoff with 8-speed Shimano hub gear has vertical drop outs for the rear wheel and a derailleur-type chain tensioner. I can see how horizontal drop outs (to allow chain adjustment) could be troublesome, because...

    36v sla charged voltage?

Good enough - about 13.5 volts per 12 volt battery is a sensible top-out voltage for an SLA. A standard 'wet' battery (as used in cars, etc) tops out at about one volt higher. So - in your case 13.5 x3 = 40.5. Rog.
