At the end of the day, the battery is usually the most expensive cost of an electric bike. Even if it's made up of non branded cells. So expect a fairly mediocre bike at that price. My first ever bike was a Cyclamatic. I think I purchased it for something like 400 quid, but we're talking years...

Thinking of ditching the car and commuting the 7 miles to work. Will buy a UK legal electric bike for this task. Does anyone here commute all year round? If so, are harsh winters doable, or not recommended? Plus, any other advice would be most welcome.

If it were me, I would go for a mid drive like the Bafang BBS01 250w. You can utilize the gearing to haul you and the bike up the hills. I think a 250w hub motor would struggle! Also, it is easier to repair a puncture with a mid drive, as you take the wheel off like any normal push bike. Hub...

Although not an ideal solution, you could use a programming cable to limit the maximum current drawn from the battery. This may extend your ride time until the battery cuts out, but will blunt performance somewhat.
