Most eMTB (mid to high spec) are using 1x10 or 1x11 with 11-42t or 11-46t cassette,. With 38T chainring they will climb almost anything while being able to spinout to 40-45km( fast pedalling). A 34T chainring will spinout in mid 30s, has advantage of being able to use eco or tour for steep climbs.
