Any recommendations for a mountain bike in the £1000-2000 range?
You might get some responses by posting in the which bike shall I buy section rather than in here which is for reviews.

If you do, include more info such as proposed use.

Maybe see if you can still get one of Giants Dirte hard tail or full suspension MTB,s I've heard there are massive discounts on 2016 models they have high torque Yamaha motors good battery packs and excellent build quality.

With eMTB the only way to go is factory mid drives eg Bosch, Yamaha, Brose, Shimano E8000. There are hardtails using Shimano Steps E6000 drive but it is lower powered and only rated for light off road. Manufacturers Haibike, KTM, Giant, Specialized, Scott, Trek, Cube and Merida.

At £2000 a hardtail Merida with E6000 or hub drives (not ideal) are probably about it.

You can make a fabulous conversion for that sort of money

I don't agree with the comment that shop bought is best

I've ridden legal and illegal (dongled) shop bought bikes including a ktm, a haibike and a moustache

I've also ridden converted charge cooker, on one inbred and a specialised (can't recal the model)

Other than saying hubs are a no-no for mtb / proper off-road it isn't correct to dismiss conversions in my view

Brilliant! You won't regret it ... Good choice you will appreciate the instant torque delivery and you can always rely on good back up service from Giant. Guess you will be giving it a good off road test this weekend?

When I had a Giant Dirte 2 I bought an additional battery from ripcord cycles near York it was an ex display battery which had only about 50 miles on it. Payed £295 for it, amassive saving.

Predictive typing is a pain sometimes! It's not ripcord cycles, it's fulford cycles, a suburb of York, just south of the city, they are a Giant agent, the batteries are from Giants main sales distribution centre near Leicester I think.

Fulford cycles buy them up and sell them on. First saw them on eBay but gave them a ring he travelled up to pick up. At about half price it was snip and was a good battery as promised.
