I bought an E-bike from power pedals around 2012 called “The Big Hit” made by a company named “Tonaro”. It’s a Chinese brand and has subsequently gone out of business which means finding spare parts or upgrading components is fairly difficult. I’m not talking about its seat, wheels or tyres, but of course am referring to the core of the bike, it’s motor, battery and cables.

At this moment, after a professional Shimano Alfine installation, the power has started to cut off! The shop carried out a full service but when the bike came back to me it became apparent that the unit no longer was functioning in the way it was intended. Every local bike shop, Cycle Surgery, Velorution or Fullycharged, all based in London will not touch the electrics stating that they are not capable of setting up a guarantee or warranty for work completed.

This is ultimately quite frustrating and I now need to source a new battery to either replace or upgrade my current setup. I know there are companies who fabricate batteries but I would prefer a design that is purposefully suited for the bikes dimensions from the start as an original part. The battery is a 36V 10ah 360Wh configuration and came with a Li-ion charger which has seen better days. If I could get any information relevant to my situation it would help immensely. Hence the forum post and membership status.

I have fair experience with tinkering with bikes, although this is my first E-bike. Improving upon the basic sales package as mentioned earlier with the Alfine rear hub internal gearing, I have also added new handle bars (ZOOM), a shorter headset, a CAT speedometer along with schwalbe puncture proof tyres (the extra weight previously made nails and staples pass through the rubber tread far to easily on many occasion) all for functionality. Not to mention a Topeak handle bar bag, two front torch lights an ergonomic saddle and bar end mirrors to boot for safety!

I’m health concious and enjoy helping others, let’s hope we can make our e-bike/pedelec world a better place.

I remember the Tonaro models well, originally sold here by a West of England company called Powerpedals. In some other countries they were sold under other names. The motor unit was based on the Yamaha PAS design that ran from 1999 to 2006.

You won't be able to source a battery to fit that unique carrier and of course the carrier can't be replaced on that bike. Information Link

Your best bet is to have the battery expertly recelled and this company can handle that for you at a reasonable price:

These were the other names they were sold under:

Tonaro is the original name of the Chinese maker.

Hi Flecc,

I am absolutely stunned at the response time for this post! I will check with the battery makers as soon as I stop typing this..... Thanks a lot for the direction, the information you have provided about other operational names is very interesting too.

We do our best. :)

I've just added a note above that Aseako still list spares being available as well as Tonaro models with your style of battery.

I just finished an email to Aseako in au. There last site update was for 2016, I hope I get a reply. If not I could try their phone number, but I can wait a few extra days before then for the email. If I can, I’ll get a bunch of spares, main ring, battery, charger, possibly a motor etc. I relish my ebike and because of you Flecc, it may have an extended life.... 5 or maybe even 10 years added longevity!

Thanks again :)

I had to give an update for this situation. The Aussie sites are no longer responding to email request making it impossible to get any new information. I did however follow the lead to BGA-Reworking (thanks Flecc) and have resolved my problem with a battery re-cell operation. I’m currently running the new battery at 15.5ah as oppose to the 10ah with the original battery setup. The brand name of these little beauties is “Boston Power”, they came highly recommended and with a 3000 cycle rate I can see why. A new BMS was added and all other kinks where ironed out. So now I have to wait and see if the unit stands the test of time. Jimmy at the shop was a great conversationalist, he was patient in explaining the in’s n outs of how, what, and why, and at the end I felt confident enough to trust his expertise. The sum was fair and I can see myself using the team again for further upgrades or replacements. I hope this helps somebody out there :)

Good result Jimmy is the bees knees for battery talk and recell, both my brother and a I have used his services as have many other son the forum.
He must be the most recommended non ebike seller on here despite his eclectic collection of used ebikes in the workshop.
