I need to lose 1 gear on the rear

Bit of a n00b question. Dunno if this can be done properly or not.
Just installed a BPM rear hub kit to my Giant Escape. I knew beforehand that the free wheel in the kit had only 8 sprockets. My bike had a 9 sprocket cassette so I was losing 1 gear.

I can go up and down the gears OK but of course I get full 9 clicks on the gear lever so one of the gears skips and jumps a bit before settling. In effect I only get 8 gears of course.

So can it be adjusted so that I basically go from 2 to 9 clicks on the gear lever? I want to be able to lose click no.1 and not even access it so it moves freely from 2 to 9. Is this possible?

You have the Alivio rear derailleur but the principle is still the same.
Use gears 1-8.
You need to adjust the H and L limit screws to stop the chain coming off on 9.
Make sure that the chain still runs smoothly on 8 and does not jump anywhere on 9.
If it jumps off the cog on 9, turn the H screw clockwise 1-3 turns to stop it.

Check the H (high, top) screw:

Check the L (low) screw:
