Is there an road legal kit for an 48v 14.5ah battery?

why go down to 250w from 1000w? chances u will run foul of the law about as likely as the moon actually being cheese. spesh as ur a big guy u going to feel gutted when u take it for a first spin.

the Bafang SWX02 48V code 16 is a 5:1 geared hub motor optimised to climb hills for heavy people. It has a huge torque at low speed.
The OP's 1000W motor is a direct drive which does best at high speed (>20 mph).

I'm too throttle happy lol I use the throttle too much and get past 15mph way to often. And don't get enough exercise done. I need help because I've postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) which means any exercise I do standing up (even walking) puts a great deal of strain on my body. So just slowing going on a bike would help me but I can't handle hills at the moment.

Hello Woosh, how do you do? I tried to PM you although I couldn't find out how. So is the acceleration/speed of the swx02 lower than other hubs to make up for it's torque? I'm curious what you lose for the torque gain.

Would you sell me the Bafang SWX02 48V kit without the battery please?

If not bothered about legal marking could have gone with 350w Yose hub kit from Berlin for < £190.

My one @17a & 48v goes vey nicely up inclines with 700w + output. Unrestricted 28mph with 48/11t gearing though could go a bit faster with 52t gearing.

It will depend on how fast you ultimately want to go.
Most of the hubs have quite a fast 280 - 300rpm winding speed, whether 36 or 48v.

My hub is 36v 280rpm however I also run it at 48v which increase the winding 25 - 30%, 28/29 mph has me spinning out with 48/11t gearing. A 36V hub run at 48v will be faster then a 48v hub if both winding speeds are the same.
Having the 17a controller will give up to 800w of power output, though with inefficacy approx. 160w will be lost at the wheel. That said 600 odd watts at the wheel is some serious oomph for steeper inclines.

48v controller or better still a KT 36/48v dual voltage one and obviously 48v power supply.
Most 36v controllers only have 50v capacitor so not able to handle 13s/54.6v.

Yes you can run 250w 36v hub at 48v. 17a should be fine also 20a, though if you use a KT LCD3 or 6 you can lower amp draw if you found the hub getting to warm.

If you want torque you ideally need < 230 rpm hub.
A bafang bpm with winding code 13 - 16 or CST winding code 15 or 16.
BPM Code 16 is about 190rpm no load speed and 160 load speed.
BPM Code 15 is about 205 NLS and 170 LS.

Bafang CST hubs tend to be wound (rpm) a bit lower then the BPM by approx. 10/15rpm in the slower rating.

Depending on the quality and heat resistance of the magnets, temporary loss of magnetism can start at 80°C and permanent loss at more or less 120°C. Standard ball bearings have a maximum operating temperature of about 120°C. Nylon gears also don't like excess heat, the best way to remove heat is to use ATF (automatic transmission fluid) as a coolant. Not too much you don't want it leaking all over the garage floor, she will not be impressed. :D

Those being known factors...

You can double the voltage if you keep the Amps down so 72v and 10-11 amps will make the motor spin twice as fast. You need a 72v controller and a couple of 36v batteries in series.

You can run a 36v ATF cooled motor at 52v with a 30 Amp controller as long as you use the power in short bursts (yes that is about 1.2 kW at the wheel).

Your motor won't last as long as at EN15194 values but you will have either speeding tickets or black tyre marks all over the drive in front of the garage and that lingering smell of something electric which has gone up in smoke :)

Winding speed 349rpm not very high torque for the op.
I had a motor like that at 48 volt 20amp,great torque,isnt the oxy emtm about the same winding?anyway the torque diffrence is biggest at very low speed.so for long climbs at low speed I would choose another winding.usually you can ask the seller for another winding

Bought a charger from them few weeks back. No custom charge. Opened the thing up as you do and apart from the pub is glued into place, no stand offs, very well built, include a built-in mains power switch.

As to the question only a buyer could answer. Photographs tell a thousand words. However, cracking open equipment is priceless. :)

Thank you very much for this information anotherkiwi. I really don't know enough about electronics and engineering to go down the path of diy hot rodding.

Do you know of links to buy the ideal controller and hub kit please? I've been looking around google with searchs such as "48v 250w/350w" and i'm not getting much of anywhere. I understand rpm and torque... although these winding codes? I used to sell gemstones to wire wrappings.. so I know they used different copper wire gauges. For speed are the hubs winded with thinner wires yet more turns, whereas for torque it's thicker wires yet less turns while keeping the same amount of copper?
