Carbon e-bike seeks funding

Shanghai-based Holger and Cheri Hüttlin are the brains behind the latest electric bike showcasing on Indiegogo.

The HÜTTLIN E-Roadster is described as ‘super lightweight’ at 16.9kg with a carbon frame, forks, handlebars and seatpost. The company say: “Carbon fiber has both phenomenal strength and superior fatigue resistance when compared to other commonly used materials such as aluminium or steel.

“The greatest benefits of a lightweight e-bike is easier handling of the bike which means that you can treat this e-bike as you would a regular bike. You can easily lift the bike up a flight of stairs or lift it into the trunk of your car. “

Of the Bafang 250w crank motor and controller, the company add their “business interactions with this factory has not only allowed us to learn about its operations and their people but also solidifies our confidence in their ability to make good motors”

A lock-on 36V battery is powered by Panasonic cells while the Shimano Deore 10 speed drive train offers both “smooth shifting” and the “versatility to ride any terrain” say the Hüttlins. The prototype is also equipped with hydraulic disc brakes (180mm disc rotors), a sports saddle and 27.5 Maxxis tyres.

Cheri and Holger are keen cyclists and when asked about the story behind their e-bike told us: “The inspiration for the carbon e-bike came from our own desire to own lightweight, well-balanced e-bikes. Holger and I each own urban city e-bikes which weigh around 26kg and it’s not so easy, especially for me (Cheri), to handle such a heavy bike.

“So, we chose carbon components to keep the weight of the bike down and we wanted to equip it with a really good electrical system which would be comparable to other e-bikes, so we chose the Bafang mid-drive and a solid 12Ah battery.”

Indiegogo have provided the sales platform for the couple to introduce the bike to the market and retail it directly to customers.

Cheri explained: “This way, the selling price is competitive and we reach out to more consumers. Only with a larger order quantity will we have more power with the suppliers to do some custom solutions that we think would be great for the bike. Therefore this campaign will be a big step for the development of our HÜTTLIN brand and the funds we raise from the sale of the E-Roadster will not only go into further development for this carbon e-bike, but also into development of our upcoming models.”
