Is it possible that it is just color? Judging from the pictures on eBay it appears that the R2 is lighter silver and the L2 is grayer. Thats just a couple of examples and seems unlikely. -G

Did more searching and found the answer. No. The Next Generation battery is bigger at the base. The silver is the older one, the black is the Next Gen. -G
