Thanks everyone ! That advice really helped my self doubt, so I went back at it with more force, keeping the gear side tight until the LHS started moving, and everything went fine. I can now stop in a decent distance again :)

And now it’s charging. Didn't change anything, but there’s no spark and it’s looking good for the moment. Maybe I needed to turn the battery off (it’s off now) and I’d got that wrong last time I plugged it in (I still have to get used to having a switch that works).

Thanks again all :) The down tube is a rounded square-ish shape, and the screw that's being awkward is the only one that's corroded (of course !) and is also only visible due to the rounded edge of the tube, so the screwdriver is going in at a 45 degree angle and so it's proving tricky to get...
