Success! For anyone reading this for reference, the Hall sensors on the Voilamart 1000w hub read "502A 85" something. I don't really understand the ratings but after a bit of research, I bought some 41F/SS41/SH41/SS41F type and soldered them in no probs. All working.

The red wire broke where all the wires come out of the axle and bends 90 degrees (rubbish design). The insulation on one of the phase wires was worn through at the same point as well so maybe it did short it. Doesn't sound good. What might that mean? Thanks for the replies by the way.

Direct drive motor, no internal gears so I've been rotating it forward. Been faffing with it for ages and its doing my head in.
