ERider Model 18 problems

Hi all

I have owned a Model 18 for 2 years and no probles so far. Recently, I gave it a good wash and straight away it started playing up. It seems to go on/stay on even with the key out of the ignition and is now simply refusing to operate. No problem with charging the battery - when I turn the key on, it sometimes shows up a warning signal (see photo) but not always. It won't move forward at all - turning the throttle produces nothing at all. And it seems a little jerky when I try and move it at all. My local ebike store/service people can't help - any suggestions at all? I suspect water ingress even though it is supposed to be fairly waterproof. The makers/distributors have long since closed down....

With hopeful thanks in advance!

We haven't a clue what a model 18 is. Last time I heard, it was a Norton from the 30's, in which case I would have said to try draining the carburettor. Showing a cryptic photo of the corner of an LCD doesn't really help.

One general piece of advice that works for any ebike is that if the motor will only tick, jerk or stutter, you must not give in any more than the smallest amount of power otherwise you can get consequential damage to the controller (blown MOSFETs).

One think you can check if you have the standard 9-pin connector on your motor is to make sure that it's pressed in ALL THE WAY TO THE LINE, not just in tight. 1mm short will cause problems.

Thanks for your reply. I posted the question under the ERider Model 18 thread/heading so guessed that was the best place but not posted on here before.
I will take a look at the connector - thanks, although I will be flying blind a bit! Will google some pics/suggestions and see what I can do.
Again, thoughts are much appreciated.

How did you wash it ?
Most likely one has managed to soak the electrics and shorted contacts on a PCB.

Hi there.
With a sponge and then rinsed off with water. So yes, thinking it was IPX5, should have been a bit more diligent around the display area.
General/probably ignorant thought- could this be something that might dry out? Thanks again.

At least it wasn't a pressure washer!

Look for any residual moisture, check all connectors are dry inside, if the controller is accessible check that. Many cables in and out, quite vulnerable.

Have you got a greenhouse or conservatory to let it bake for a few days?

Worst case is replacing some components i.e. display and controller, and hope the motor is OK if it doesn't recover, not the end of the world.

If you suspect water ingress/pooling and are hesitant in exposing the hidden electrics/wiring.

start by opening up what you can easily and exposing and inspecting for moisture and or damage.

lay down paper (newspaper if free ad rags still exist in your area) and invert the bike. if containing any pooled water this should give it a route to escape and the paper should provide evidence if it gets wet.. IF so more reason to open up and expose, if just to expediate drying out..
