Thanks Martin, moving the magnet towards the front of the sensor solves the intermittent issue, considering the sensor is a reed switch (I thought) it appears that while the speed sensor requires a very small latching time the dongle requires a little longer and the magnetic field is better...

I was aware of this and my later classic has the 1:1 error if you try this or with a dongle have a rear sprocket exactly half the chainwheel. Not an issue with the Alfine as the internal ratios are odd.

The Rohloff is definitely 54mm which matches my BBS02 500w 36v with the standard 46t chainring, this is dished already and if the italian 42t chainring matches you nexus at 46mm, then it must come in another 8mm which must be very close to the chainstay. Can't tell from the pics.
