What do you carry in your repair kit?

Nice one! Can I just ask, how does the iron actually work? I've bought two cheap gas soldering irons in the past and both failed after quite a short time because they relied on a non-replaceable catalyst in the body of the iron. I guess they'd still be okay for a one-off emergency use, but even...

Anyone seen this? Hydrogen powered bike

In the example you gave, you were able to identify the source of the smell, so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make...?

Anyone seen this? Hydrogen powered bike

Easy - just add methyl mercaptan to the gas, as has been done with piped natural gas for decades now.

Heh...I just avoid the sink estates entirely.

    Lights again

Interesting. I wasn't aware of this effect. However, my second question would be, is it possible to patch something like this into a Panasonic hub-drive bike without invalidating the warranty? For me, anyway, I'm thinking that separate battery lights are still the way to go. For most other ebike...

    Lights again

I disagree. Lights are too safety-critical. If your main battery runs out of juice you're riding in the dark which is dangerous and illegal. I think you need some kind of backup, be it lights with separate batteries or a dynohub.

    Lights again

Thanks, folks. The technical knowledge on this forum is great! For being seen, I couldn't agree more, derf. I've got a dynohub already and Hermann lights that run all the time, night and day. However, the front lamp just isn't that beefy because it has to share the 1.5w nominal power from the...

    Lights again

One frustrating thing with these eBay lights is that hardly any of them specify the burn time on a fresh set of batteries. To be useful to me, any bike light needs to run for a minimum two hours at full power - ideally more like 3 hours in case of any problems en route. I have my doubts that...

Man imprisoned for two years for not declaring ebay income

Kind of. The big corporations are brazen about it, with the likes of Vodafone "offering" to pay half their tax bill and HMRC taking it and running. It's disgusting. There are small businesses at it too though, but mainly in the building trade. Most other small businesses are closely monitored...

Man imprisoned for two years for not declaring ebay income

There is no *easy* solution, but there is a simple one: close the tax loopholes instead of creating them (yes, I'm looking at your Osborne). Of course, as flecc rightly points out, this would require international cooperation because the rich, like the big corporations, are international...

Man imprisoned for two years for not declaring ebay income

The problem is, chasing up all those small evaders comes at a cost - a massive cost. HMRC's tactics are to target one or two of the bigger offenders (like the gentleman mentioned in the OP) and make an example of them in the hope that it'll deter everyone else. This works to a certain degree...

Who wants to steal my bike?

I think it has its place, in certain niche applications. However, for general crime prevention there's scant evidence that cctv actually works. There has been a drop in acquisitive crime since cct started to become much more common but crime was falling anyway so it's doubtful that the drop...

Who wants to steal my bike?

Ahh. Just a hunch then. Burglaries have been falling for the last few years anyway, which explains the drop in crime you've noticed. It's unlikely to be anything to do with the CCTV.

    Cycling in London (again)....

That's all very well and good. It still does nothing to solve the tritium problem though. Frankly, I'd pull the plug on fusion research tomorrow. We already have a perfectly good fusion reactor, fully fuelled for several billion years, complete with gravitational confinement and highly...
