    Death Trap?

As someone who's sold a fair bit of stuff on ebay over the last ten years, I have a lot of sympathy for this guy. I don't know why it should be the case, but eBay users are a special kind of stupid compared to any other customers I've dealt with.

    Daytime Lights

Exactly. As I said, you don't even notice it. On the other hand, I think the improvement in safety IS quite noticeable.

    Cycle Paths

And herein lies the problem. It's not exactly fair on the pedestrians, who are at just as much risk from cars and cyclists are. In the Netherlands, they take typically space away from the roads, not the footpath, in order to create safe cycling spaces. Narrow roads become single-track for...

    Daytime Lights

Of course, if you used battery-powered lights, the point is moot. And I think there's a big safety benefit here.

    Cycle Paths

That's true, but it's also a good reason to avoid shared paths.

    Daytime Lights

I did wonder about this, so I tried it with the lamp physically disconnected. Freewheeling the bike on a stand, there's a slight difference in the time take for the wheel for come to rest. Whilst actually riding the bike, there's no discernible difference. That said, I'm using a new Shimano...

    Check your nuts

Sage advice. I came off my bike not long ago due to the handlebar adjustment bolt working loose. Didn't break any bones but ended up scuffed and bruised. A salutary lesson in bike maintenance.

    Cycle Paths

For the most part, I avoid cycle paths. In addition to the reasons mentioned above, they're often badly pot-holed or otherwise uneven due to poor maintenance, and are far more likely to have broken glass and other detritus of the kind that causes punctures. If I happen to delay a few motorists...

    Daytime Lights

Anyone else use their lights during the day? My new bike came with a dynohub and bright flashing light on the front that runs continuously, whenever the bike is moving and for a minute or so after it stops. At first, I thought it was a bit overkill, but I'm beginning to realise that it makes a...

Cyclist Films His Own Road Accident

That's where I'd have been looking too. Drivers are generally a little more careful when turning right across oncoming traffic, but not this moron.

    Newbie with dodgy knees!

If you will ever have to pick the bike up (to load it into a car, or up some steps, or whatever) it would be prudent to consider the weight of each bike you're trying. I was quite keen on the Wisper too, until I tried picking it up and nearly gave myself a hernia...!

    DIY Maintenance

Looking at some of the cutaway diagrams available online for the big 11-gear and 14 gear hubs, the number of tiny components is phenomenal. Given that many of the internals also take a high load, it's not surprising that making them reliable is a significant engineering challenge. I dream of...

    DIY Maintenance

It's a shame that so few e-bikes have hub gears, and you're right, the ones that do tend to be the more expensive ones.

    DIY Maintenance

Ha ha ha...only in Britain would we even be having this discussion. In the rest of Europe, no commuter would even consider deraileur gears - for use outside cycling sport, they're a joke. If you want to just get on your bike and ride it, get hub gears every time. They're extremely reliable and...

    Bike Cameras

Looks like a nice bit of kit, jackhandy. Personally, I could do without the screen though.

Speakers on an ebike - any thoughts?

I know exactly where you're coming from. And I'm not comfortable with wearing headphones either. I know people do it, but I'd rather be aware of the traffic that's about to pass me. Thinking about it, I wonder if it would be possible to build some very small speakers into the helmet. They...

    Bike Cameras

Anyone know of a camera that'll do 2 hours plus between recharges? That's what I'd need for commuting both ways. In my case, I'd been wanting it purely for safety purposes, so it'd have to be good enough to identify licence plates and faces at a reasonable distance.

    New bike for serious commuting

Hey, Graham, was that your Kudos ebike parked outside Waitrose this lunchtime?

    New bike for serious commuting

Will do, Halfer. I'm going to wait a few weeks though, just to get the bugs ironed out and get used to riding the bike.

I got it from ebikeshed in Stoke, Graham. Hopefully see you around.
