£1000 ebike for big fat man doing short commute with big hill

it makes sense converting a good bike that you own and is already fitted with mid or top of the range European components. You'll end up with a top end bike that is mechanically well designed and equipped as a Haibike or a KTM for the price of a cheap Chinese. But if you have to spend £500-£600...

    Woosh Sirocco CD

yes, I think that's likely. It's best to charge after 18 miles anyway. Just before you put the battery on charge, measure its voltage, you may see it increase after a week.

    Woosh Sirocco CD

I agree with d8veh's assessment. What you see on the LCD display of battery voltage is just voltage at that moment and it's not as accurate as measuring with a volt meter. You can see the voltage sags on the LCD when climbing a steep hill. The voltage will recover somewhat when you stop...

What is the point of 'fat bikes'

the wheels and tyres are surprisingly light, not much heavier than normal wheels and tyres. I rode one with rear 24" rim, the front has been fitted with a woosh BigBear 26" kit. It's comfortable, no need for front suspension.

Dynamos and hub dynamos, Battery charging

if you build a regen braking system (flywheels or geared e-brakes), you can do better than off the shelf Shimano 6V 3W dynamo or using the free regen functionality on DD motors .

Dynamos and hub dynamos, Battery charging

you are restricted to DD motors if you want to use the same motor to recover kinetic energy. The total weight of geared motor + dynamo can be less than that of a DD motor with similar output. the voltage generated by a dynamo varies largely with the wheel speed, the output needs to be...

Dynamos and hub dynamos, Battery charging

there may be a reasonably good argument for an optimally designed energy recovery system mounted on the non-motorized wheel. You can keep the gearbox on the hub motor, control and engage the energy recovery system when you want, not necessarily during braking. These are just two of the good reasons.

Suggestions for Pashley Picador 3 speed conversion

for trikes, the crank drive conversion is easiest, then front hub BPM kit. The Q128H from bmsbattery is for rear hub.

How much power am I contributing?

You need 470WH for 33 hilly miles. The woosh Predictor is slightly pessimistic, you are young and strong, you'll probably need less than 350WH for 33 miles.

I see. My post crossed with yours. I was thinking along the line of anotherkiwi's suggestion of the Decathlon Kemel. Decathlon sell it for £85 delivered and a Xiongda kit with 48V 8AH downtube battery would just fit the bill without needing torque arms. That'd suit mountainous terrain of Spain.

You can still get pretty good bikes for this sort of price, it takes just a bit of research and reading. Look out for aluminium frame, 8-Fun motor, Samsung cell battery, Lishui controller, sealed cartridge bottom bracket, Kenda puncture resistant tyres, stainless steel spokes, Tektro brakes...

there has been no link to real stories. I spent a bit of time last year searching the internet for stories linking to the use of throttle. The only source so far, also mentioned on this forum, are articles in one of the online trade magazines quoting from an unnamed UK bike dealer. you are more...
