New ebike - teething problems or more?

the motor is noisy but does not sound wrong. Better keep riding may be another 100 miles and make anther recording. PS: I thought I heard some clicking noise on top of the motor noise.

New 250w MXUS motor outrunner 1:8 reduction

I guess we'd never agree on what makes economical sense. My point is simple: minimum hourly cost for any work is £30. It takes at least 2 hours to remove the wheel, strip and re-assemble a motor, even if you only replace a clutch. If you have to replace the ball bearings or hall sensors, add...

New 250w MXUS motor outrunner 1:8 reduction

1:8.3 reduction ratio seems to be a very interesting choice. I'd like to see the inside arrangement of this motor. If it uses single stage reduction gear, then I am interested. The main reason that I object against motors like the Q128 is their double stage reduction gear. It's kind of the same...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

that blog is wildly exaggerated. The reason we are in this mess is because of the voting system. All we need is a coalition government to stop a few MPs making a mokery of our democratic system.

is 8 the magic number? Joking aside, I like it.

No, it becomes more likely noisy after 6,000 miles.

New ebike - teething problems or more?

this happens unfortunately fairly often to bikes sold by mail order firms. The cranks are new, the pedals are new, so it is not likely a manufacturing issue but your bf did not put them on properly. The right pedal has normal thread, the left pedal has left hand thread. To avoid cross...

HMRC gives £700 million IT contract to Amazon.

there are international tax and extradition treaties for cases like that. If this were doable, the drug barons wouldn't deposit their money in US banks or any banks. Ordering a US corporation to deliver up third party's documents that it holds on foreign soil is going to start a trade war. In...

    Fascism returns to Spain

there must be a mechanism for Catalans to decide their future. If not a vote, what is it?

You try hard to contrive a hypothetical situation which is quite different in context. I can see why the DoJ compels a US corporation to deliver up some of their emails not stored on US soil. It's another matter to ask Amazon to break UK laws.

HMRC gives £700 million IT contract to Amazon.

I read the story. It's the DoJ vs Microsoft. Nothing to do with the UK. 1. Whether there is a future for international cloud computing Yes. I don't know if you know much about Cisco routers OS. The same argument could be aired about US dominance because Cisco routers are ubiquitous on the net...

AWS run about 2 millions servers worldwide. I don't know why some of you insist on imaginary issues. Personally, I think they do the right thing.

HMRC gives £700 million IT contract to Amazon.

That's a very specific context: 2001 antitrust case, United States v. Microsoft Corp. The said account can be relevant in their investigation. I can't see the US government compel Amazon to hand over HMRC databases.

HMRC gives £700 million IT contract to Amazon.

I am pretty sure that a multi-million pound contract carries a lot more specific terms than the SLA contract that I sign up to. There is no reason to think that the location of the data has to be abroad. Redundancy can be created within the UK data farms.

if you would be so kind as to provide me with a link to the case. I can't comment until I know more. I use cloud services provided by well known American firms (Google and Microsoft) in my professional life. As far as I am aware, the service contracts do not mention US laws.

what are you on about? why storing HRMC data outside the UK when Amazon has 3 server farms in the UK?

you guys should check the facts out before making judgement about HMRC decision to award AWS the cloud service contract. Amazon has facilities in London. https://aws.amazon.com/london/ Trust me on this, in cloud computing, size matters.

physical access to the data does not equate to full access. One of my old friends work on ECC (elliptic curve cryptography), we talk now and then about data encryption. Honestly, it's a lot more difficult to crack the encryption of a stored database than to steal by a trusted employee.

I wouldn't jump to conclusion. Datacentred business is / was very small. Its service is to provide storage service, looking after a bunch of servers. I doubt that the contract with HMRC is much more than a few millions £, certainly not in the tens of millions £. The cloud storage market is...
