My bike developed a problem this week, symptoms of which were the motor was turning on and off intermittently and then eventually stopped working altogether. On investigation it turned out to be the sensor on the pedals that tells the motor that you are indeed pedalling. On my Powabyke Eurobyke it is a plastic disc on the left hand pedal that has 6 metal contacts, this disc should rotate as you pedal and the contacts pass by the sensor and tell the controller to send power to the motor. In this case the disc had jammed but was difficult to see whilst riding.
I would imagine that other bikes have a similar set up, so could be the first thing to investigate if you are experiencing similar symptoms
