Aftermarket upgrades vs buying higher model

It seems with a lot of bikes that going up to the next model costs way more than buying the base model and swapping out components later. For example going from
https://www.orbea.com/gb-en/ebikes/road/gain-road/cat/gain-d50-19
to
https://www.orbea.com/gb-en/ebikes/road/gain-road/cat/gain-d40-19
costs £500 extra, but if i was to buy the lower model and then upgrade aftermarket, i could do it for a fraction of the price. And then I could sell the extra components. Am I missing something here?
