Are they punishing piracy in the U.S.? I've heard of fines and sometimes even imprisonment

Penalties for piracy have been increased For multiple offenses - up to ten years imprisonment. Previously such piracy was considered a misdemeanor and was limited to a fine. But more often everything is fine. Thus, to download movies illegally is quite dangerous. But thanks to the safe torrents on the pirate bay such consequences can be avoided, because they are considered perfectly legal, and users can safely use them.

Today's piracy law has its roots in the United States Constitution. Article I, Section 8, clause 10 gives Congress the power to “define and punish piracy and felonies on the high seas and offenses against the law of nations
