Brake cable problem

A few weeks ago my front brake cable snapped, I didn't think much of it and replaced the cable assuming it's just a service item. Now the roads are nice and sticky and I'm braking harder I'm a bit worried about it as the bike must have been about 6 months old when the first cable broke, the most I've seen people change cables is yearly so something doesn't seem right.
The cable snapped where it attaches to the caliper, it seems that repeated bending of the cable has resulted in work hardening and it became brittle. I've only seen this on the Shimano disk brake so it's likely to be a design flaw in the caliper, although the motion is similar to other disk brake calipers.
It might be a one off and might be connected to the way I adjust the cable to take up brake pad wear, has anyone else had a fraying or snapped cable at the caliper? I've done a little reading and found Trek recommend checking cables monthly, not something I thought about before but I should remember to check more often.

The reference I found is here.
