Faulty Controller?

I set off this morning ok but after a short time the motor kept cutting out. It would restart if I reset the controller but quickly died again each time. It would last a bit better if i held down the ON switch but that's not very practical. When it fails the controller just shows 8 (not flashing) along with the power and assist bars.

Is the controller faulty and easy for me to replace?

Now fitted this (never seen so many wires but you just replace like for like!) and seems to be working now.
