Geared/high torque 48v motor

Hello.
I am converting an old ride on mower that looks a bit like a tractor to an electric ride on for my young son. The blades and cutting deck have been removed.
At the moment the engine spindle with a pulley on it runs a pulley that is connected to the gearbox. In operation the engine is turned up to full throttle and left like that and after that the "tractor" is controlled by which gear it is in and the foot pedal clutch. It only goes about 6mph top speed. I think the spindle speed is about 2600rpm.
Basically I want to replace the petrol engine with the electric motor using its spindle in exactly the same way.
What I want is a motor that has a high torque possibly geared that will give good power but not necessarily make the mower run any faster than it does now. More about grunt than speed. I have looked at various motors on the web but not sure about which one would suit. Also if I I did have a motor that had high torque but had slower rpm can that be made up for by have a larger pulley on its spindle than the existing one?
Also I was going to set it up to a heavy duty enough controller and foot pedal for a bit "finer" driving.

Hi, maybe look into mobility scooters. I don't know what systems or voltages they use but many have been converted as diy projects.
Gearbox may be a problem (they often use rear axle with differential) but maybe the motor and controls would be OK for you.

Thanks. I've already got the body , it is the ride on mower that I mentioned. It also has the gearbox intact, I just want to replace the petrol engine with an electric motor apart from that exactly the same. Really just want to know about which motor would be suitable. Thanks again

I'd second the mobility scoot suggestion. Get a secondhand one off ebay for £100-£200 and it's already got the perfect high torque motor along with batteries (they're normally 2x 12v), control potentiometer and even an ignition key.

Just use what you need and sell the rest as spares and the whole project might only cost you 50 quid....

2600rpm is way too high for geared hub e-bike motors.
Most e-bike motors are 200-250RPM because they drive the 26"-28" wheels around 15mph-20mph.

Most e-bike motors are 200-250RPM because they drive the 26"-28" wheels around 15mph-20mph.

You must make a serious effort and invest a lot of money on it. Hence, I'll try to offer my opinion on the matter. You can locate tiny compact tractor here, and I don't think there will be any issues. It's truly great equipment, and I believe it will benefit and facilitate your farming to the most extent possible.

Well done for wanting to build an interesting project for your son, all I got was old pram wheels and a plank.

I can understand your son wanting to drive a 'tractor' not a mobility scooter but maybe you could use the tractor body to disguise a cheap scooter. I'm sure panelwork would be easier to engineer then the mechanical drive.

These projects can suffer from mission creep where a lot of money gets spent on something that he will either become fed up with or grow out of.

Building it together is great for passing skills on and dad/son involvement. My dad was into woodwork and always involved me from an early age. Onlookers were aghast when they found me using razor sharp chisels and knives in complete safety when I was about seven!
