Hybrid Mudguards and Rear Pannier Racks?

I'm not a huge fan of conventional full-size mudguards, but prefer the shorter mountain bike type. Can anyone recommend a trail/hybrid mountain bike mudguard + pannier rack combo? (Not clip on.. see example mudguard below)

I have the topeak beam rack - they do a mud guard that clips underneath. for the front I have a topeak defender. looks good and does the job.

Rack with and without bag & bike with front and rear defenders (I swap out the rack for the full rear to save weight when I don't need the pans).

The close fitting full mudguards on the Rose are a mixed blessing in that they work well in rain, but the tiniest bit of mud clogs them.

Something like the guards in Dave's pic are probably a good compromise between fit and clearance.
