Hi I have the chance to buy a 2002 giant lafree twist are they any good what what if anything should I look for

They were good at that time, but they are very low powered and with short range by today's standards and there are no spares or batteries available for them now. It is after all almost 20 years old which is very old for an e-bike and not a buy I'd advise.

Although most were reliable they did suffer some electronic faults that had no solution since the electronics are heavily encapsulated so repair was by replacing the motor unit at £500 each, but they are not available now either.
