Quietest conversion kit?

Is there such a thing as a relatively quiet kit?

I tried a few different ebikes today, having previously only experienced the Freego hawk and a Giant suede and was unpleasantly surprised by how noisy they were. It got me wondering about kits, which is the more likely route I will take I think. Does anyone have any comments or recommendations on kits, not just re the noise!

I am thinking of converting a step through hybrid, so 700c wheels, probably with a rack battery. Until today I had assumed front motor, as simpler, as the suede, old though it may be hadn't made enough noise to make me notice it. But now I'm not so sure. I didn't like the crank drive ones. My health isn't great at times so a throttle is necessary as well as PAS.

Originally I was thinking the cheaper the better, but now that's not such a high priority as getting a reliable, relatively quiet if possible motor.

The BBS crank drive is very quiet compared to hub drives, having said that d8veh say's the Xiongda 2 speed is very quiet for a hub motor but I have not tried one yet, most hubs tend to be in the 55-60 db range. I have Bafang bpm & cst and both are audible but powerful.

I can confirm that the Xiongda XD motor is very quiet but I wouldn't go for it because one of the samples I tried has locked up on me, to me, that was a design weakness. If I had to choose a hub motor, the bmsbattery's Q128H 48V rear hub kit is very quiet, powerful and cheap.

The Heinzmann direct drive motors are not just quiet they are silent, the Ansmann direct drive motor is the same and their front wheel friction drive motor is virtually silent.

We supply all of the above and you can see more via these links to our website

Or if it's a complete stepthru frame bike with the aforementioned motor kits we have those as well, again they can be seen on our website here

Many thanks for the replies - more to research!

On a first glance though I can't see that throttles are in the kits/on the bikes. Have I missed them or are they not available with these ones? I do need/want a throttle!

kits come practically 100% with throttle, don't worry about that. Don't worry also about the noise of crank drive kits, they are very, very quiet in comparison to bikes with front motors. The noise comes from the gearbox. A good gearbox (like in crank drive kits or a double stage reduction gearbox in hub motors) makes very little noise.

noise of a woosh Krieger by acm2000, typical of a crank drive kit:

Heinzmann kits are available with either torque sensor or throttle as are the eZee kits that we also supply.
If you have a specific requirements it is best to send us an email to cyclezee@gmail.com

Bafang BBS motors are as quiet as you will get and come with thumb or twist throttles with left or right mounted options.

the OP wants a quiet bike with a twist grip throttle, large wheels, in a low step frame and with a large capacity battery. That would be the woosh Santana CDL.
