Having just bought a BB Quartz I would like to fit an LCD unit able to show mileage covered, trip time, etc. I’d be grateful for any leads on such devices as I’ve not located on e- bay or other places. The bike is 36v if that helps.

Unfortunately, LCD units are matched with the controller on your bike, so they need to be replaced together. Contact Batribike, as the LCD on their new bikes may be compatible with yours. What year and model is your bike?

My bike’s year is 2011 and model is Quartz Regenerative.... if as you say the LCD units are matched - then its prob the reason I cant find one.

Ok, so looks like your model preceded the LCD ones and is fitted with a direct drive motor, hence the regen and not a more common geared one. Worth contacting Batribike, but you will prob. need to replace the controller to get an LCD display.

Or simply just fit a multi function £10 - 20 bike computer either wired or wireless.

My pair of Swizzbee's have no led or lcd, both have a simple bike computer as above. Less to go wrong and unobtrusive at about 40mm in size.

Thanks chaps, I’ve spoken with BB and have been told that because of the bike’s age & it being obsolete they are unable to supply parts, that’s really a shame because the product is of exceptional quality.

Thanks for the suggestions chaps, I’ve just bought a Catseye Velo Cycle ‘puter which should do nicely - so long as it doesn’t get nicked.

PS Rather good site this!

Pardon my ignorance but what’s the difference between regen and direct (geared) drive? I know what regen means but.........drive is drive-isnt it?

Regen is only possible with a direct drive motor because it is always turning, whether powered or not. A geared motor contains reduction gears and a clutch, so only turns when power is applied. Therefore, bikes with a DD motor tend to be harder to pedal unassisted because of the drag from turning the motor. Geared motors tend to be better hill climbers because the reduction gears help the motor to spin at a more optimal speed.

So perhaps I should continue looking for a Quartz LCD Bike that might make pedalling easier? People don’t part with their Quartz very often.
I only determined my bike is regen by its type of h/ bar controller, (small black oval box having 4 red leds and a blue ON/OFF button) is there a more positive way to tell?

Thanks for the info Pete.

My small computers are 1/4 turn twist off so can easily be removed and put in my pocket.

Yes, I would think the later bikes have a geared hub motor, I suspect the regen thing was a bit of a sales gimmick a few companies tried to make thier bikes stand out from the crowd. In truth, the amount of power put back into the battery was very minimal.

Interesting, Thanks Neil, mine bought on e- bay today so will arrive in couple of days, will see how its fixed.
I will not be going that far on the bike at 81 but nice to be able to see the distance travelled etc. Its a long time since I cycled anywhere - 40 years ago I cycled to work, then later when distances increased I used my m/cycle, now I’m spoilt for choice between the car, four maxi scooters and my classic motorcycle -and my newest Quartz acquisition. All I need is a touch of warmer weather to help overcome my medical disabilities/inconveniences.

Just checked my Cateye micro wireless and it is a removable slide in slide out jobby. The only fiddly bit is setting the damn things up I find.
