I had the marathon plus on my last bike but my new bike has no suspension Soooooo thinking of a more comfy tyre, is this a good idea or not?

schwalbe big apple or stick with marathon plus? I have a feeling I will be told to stick with marathon plus just looking for advice. but at the end of the day puncture resistance more important.

The Big Apples are wonderfully comfortable and members who have them have reported very low puncture incidence, but obviously they cannot compare for puncture resistance with the Marathon Plus.

You need to make sure there's enough room for the Big Apples within mudguards, forks etc too, they are quite bulky.

1.75" for the 26" wheel size in this road tread Eddie, but see further down:

They do a 2" as well but apparently only in this trekking/touring tread which I've never tried. Could be good in the snow, as well as on normal roads, but 270 grams heavier:

AllTerrain Cycles have both:

1.75" on this link

2" on this link

After 3 punctures in a year with my Marathon Pluses, I have invested a very small amount (£4.97 including £3.50 postage) for 3 Sidewinder inner tubes from SJS Cycles (though they actually turned out to be branded Halfords when they arrived). Sidewinder Easy Fit Inner tube 16 & 20 Inch Wheels

As has been discussed in this forum, they are non-circular (i.e. sausage-shaped), and therefore lend themselves to lightning-quick roadside tube replacements, with no need to remove front or back wheel. You would of course have to either cut the damaged tube to remove it or (my preferred option) temporarily fix it out of harm's way with a couple of cable ties.

Whether or no they prove to be any good as permanent replacements (there have been comments that they may not be as balanced as a conventional tube), they should certainly be ideal to get me home, where a more leisurely repair can be done.

Eddie,

big apples are made in either 2.00 or 2.35. the second one is a baloon n felling like on the sofa but won't fit with mudguards so you better off by getting 2 inch ones.

Puncture wise as Tony said they doprovide good protection,. They have e kevlar guard inside to must be lucky to get puncture and cut it through.

hope that helps

Do you think the 2 inch all terrain will be a little more comfortable then the M plus? but as resistant to punctures?

I don't know Eddie, but since the sidewall supports those side tread profiles I suspect that Alex is right in saying they will be stiff, so probably no gain over the 1.75".

Alternatively, you could get the Big Apple 2" tyres for comfort and use the Sidewinder innertubes, but I'm not keen on those as a permanent tube. The two ends chafing can cause a self puncture and that is more likely in a very flexible tyre like the Big Apple which will allow more tube flexing.

However, if you did want to try that, here's the link for the 26" Sidewinder.

Here's a thought Eddie, use a Marathon Plus on the rear where the battery and motor weight keep the road shock bounce down anyway, together with a Big Apple on the front where the comfort is also important.

That would give you a chance to find out how good the puncture resistance of the Big Apples was without big problems with puncture repairs.

That makes good sense! we have seat post suspension, and really its the front that is the problem....... So the 2 inch big apples on front? will they fit under mudguards though:confused:

I think the 2" ones should do, it's only the larger ones that really balloon.

Eddie, I have the marathon plus atb tyres and have put 2500 miles on them. I have ridden them in all weathers, nearly everyday for 18months, and no punctures. I have run them down to35psi which makes them very comfy, especially on the trike. The central ridge helps on tarmac, and the knobblies in the snow, ice and slush.

They do feel heavy, but the motor assist makes up for that. I too dread a rear flat with the rear hub motor.

Eddie,

This was trike no.1, I refitted the kit from my mtb.

On the school run through the winter...

Here is the throttle position I settled on..

I bought the trike secondhand from D-Tek, Little Thetford, to see if I liked it. Have now traded it in for a folding, lighter one, which I will be motorising on the campsite at Presteigne all being well.

I had the bigger big apples on my 905 last year, they need 60mm mudguards. They fitted fine under the Wisper mudguards that Norman fitted last year and I'm guessing they only use one size.
The big apples are no more puncture resistant than any other kevlar lined tyre and I have had several punctures. I find rubber thickness matters more than the kevlar lining and I get many more punctures when the tyre is worn. On that basis the ATB marathon tyre should be pretty good as it's got a thick tread.
I'll probably give the marathon plus tyres a go on the 906 when I get it as the larger wheels are more comfortable anyway.
