It simply means it's a normal http web site like so many others, not an https secure web site.

https sites are usually such as banks, those involving financial transactions like traders or handling sensitive information, like your doctor's one for example.

But using examples I know where those don't apply such as pedelecs, the Natural History Museum, fungi.org and my own web sites, security isn't a big issue so unsecured http is used.

I take it it’s cheaper to run unsecured than secure

I don't know. I suppose there must be some advantage in http over https or everyone would run secure. The free web site facilities that our ISPs offer are always insecure.

The below copied from the web:

"This involves the use of an SSL certificate -- "SSL" stands for secure sockets layer -- which creates a secure encrypted connection between the web server and the web browser. Without HTTPS, any data passed is insecure."

Latest on web site security:

Leading websites, including the Daily Mail Online, Sky Sports, Argos and the University of Oxford have been publically shamed by Google.

They have started marking all websites that don't use HTTPS.

With version 68 of its Chrome browser, Google started warning users of lax security on some 20% of the web's top 500 sites.
