Anyone else tow a trailer? I take my 5yo everywhere in it, but on more eager assist modes range leaves a lot to be desired. If I am smart I can cover 40 miles in theory, on a 10ah battery. Is this reasonable? I find as expected the biggest killer is hills because of the extra load, on flatter terrain range is closer to what I get without the trailer. Want to carry a spare battery on a rack eventually but I manage with conservative use for now

I used to use a trailer to transport my son with special needs around when he was five. He's now nearly seven and I now use a rear child seat instead. It is a seat specifically for a child aged 5-10 that I ordered from Holland. In my opinion it is safer with him on the bike in a child seat than in a tag-along trailer. Together he and I weigh about 18 stone, and we travel on the highest assist level. We have two 36v 15ah batteries for the bike, each of which has a range of only about 18 miles.

Can you really cover 40 miles on a 10ah battery carrying the weight of yourself and a child? That seems remarkably good. What bike do you use?

Hi John

What is the seat you use? I have been looking at the bobike junior seat, and the wehoo turbo trailer, both of which quote being able to carry older children. Like I said the range is in theory, I am quite fit although I don't appear so anymore and do put in quite a lot of effort myself to help extend range. I cycled to the metrocentre from washington which is about 10 miles and pretty flat. I used low assist all the way and used 1 bar (out of 4) of charge. On a more typical and hilly ride I go 13 miles to my nans on medium assist and use just over 2 bars. Again I put in a lot of legwork, when I have been lazy I have used over 3 bars on the same run. Realistically the battery does anywhere from 15 to 30 miles depending on terrain and how I ride, I covered about 25 miles to stanley and back yesterday and used 3 bars, but there was some downhill coasting on the return trip. My bike is nothing fancy, a falcon spark probably rebranded chinese bike from the very catalogue. My fiance uses a cheap e bike from amazon and gets similar range sometimes a bit better due to not pulling a load. If you are getting 18 miles on high I'd say that kinda sounds right but you must live in a pretty hilly area, I would probs expect more than that but effort really does make a big difference
