Upgrade to BBSHD?

Hi guys,

I recently converted a specialised crosstrail disc 700c hybrid bike using a BBS01 kit 350 W. It has plenty of speed on the flats and I can usually get up to about 26 or 27 mph on a good day. I do find it a bit gutless on bigger hills though. I have modified the controller settings using software and the programming cable so it is operating at 100% keep current and 20 V which is the maximum permitted for this particular motor. Given this, I was wondering whether to upgrade to the BBSHD model as this would give me a good boost up the hills and it would be nice for 30 mph on the flat, I’m not really that bothered about exceeding this. It would also be good if this model can be detuned if necessary to provide similar power to the BBS01 if I need additional range. With my current motor, I have two batteries but with the maximum settings I’m lucky to get 35 miles out of the two. The batteries were sourced from eclipse, 13.5ah 36v. How would the BBSHD compare roughly in terms of battery usage?

Also, is the fitting kit identical to the BBS01? I was thinking I could just swap over the motors and the battery housing and leave all the cabling.

Any thoughts?

If you go for bbshd you will need a new battery as well as the motor as hd is 48 v or 52v :(
Thanks for the reply Peter. Yes, I would have to get a 48 or 52 V battery, I would be selling the old kit and batteries if I upgraded. My question is really whether a 17 aH battery from eclipse would be okay with the BBSHD kit and roughly what mileage this would achieve.

If I were to hazard a guess on a BBSHD running programming aimed at hill climbing performance, then I would say 1Ah per mile.

You could try bbs02 36 volt at 25 amps 500watts o_O or spend 1k+ on a new setup try electron cycles for bbshd they program 1500+watts and batts are 30q

I personally wouldn't waste my money on a 36v 500w BBS02. The difference between that and what you have now will be minimal in terms of performance.

You need to go BBS02 750w or BBSHD to achieve massive hill climbing ability. Coupled with a custom 42T chainring, my BBS02 750w is a complete beast on hills. It just keeps powering up the steepest of climbs.

HD will certainly give more power (i have both the 02 and HD versions) but something that hasn`t already been mentioned before is the HD will be ultra quiet compared to anything else
I`ve never needed anything above PAS 5 on even the steepest of hills.
Range depends on a multitude of things but a ball park figure of 50 miles with a 48v 17.5aH battery from Jimmy @ Insat.
The HD has been over-engineered by Bafang, it will run all day at 30A, some of the ebikers stateside team it up with an outboard controller pushing 50A with few problems.

Decisions! I guess I’m very tempted by the BBSHD. I’m looking for something that should last for years with a bit of tlc and with plenty of power for hills. Is it possible to ramp down the amps considerably with the programming for better range?

Yes, agreed with the 42T chain ring, I have the Lekkie bling ring, great bit of kit.

sorry, but I am not convinced that CD kits are good for over 500W real output. At that sort of continuous use, the power transmission is going to suffer wear and tear a lot more. I would recommend you go for a direct drive motor. Jim who does motor repairs here rides on one of those DD kits. 30mph is easy and silent. He has not opened his motor for two years, the original grease and bearings are still OK.
PS: he does put his battery on charge all the time when he turns up at work. That's the main inconvenience.

I have a BBSHD on a hybrid Marin and live in a very hilly area and my weak legs mean I need power up even slight hills.
As a rule I get at least 60 miles out of 26Ah 56V and on a good day can get 90 miles out of it.
I also have a BBS02 on a MTB and after 2000 miles had to replace the inner nylon gear freewheel as it got really noisy.
As Tommie said,you can run the BBSHD at full throttle all day and it wont hurt it.
Getting the best range is simply a matter of using the least amount of assist you need to keep moving,in assist 1 I use 120 watts maximum.

Thanks again for your replies guys, much appreciated. I do like the BBSXX kits, it's for leisure use only, I don't commute by bike. I have owned a hub-based Halfords carrera crossfire and that was pretty good on hills but I love that you can tweak the Bafang settings to whatever you like.
I did have a look at Insat batteries, would probably go for 17ah 48v as anything else would be out of budget. Then possibly get a smaller capacity battery later on for longer rides.

It is a torque sensor motor, I am a PAS kind of person.

I say go ahead. I reckon it's a cost effective, good looking alternative to the likes of Bosch and Panasonic. Plus, I should imagine better access to spares and technical info too.
