What is this monstrosity and how does one brake?

The Shadow ebike the first wireless electric bicycle ebike. Made in Canada

Probably electrical braking of the motor, all operated by the twistgrip used bi-directionally.

Wouldn't comply with our UK laws which require two independent brakes on every bike or trike.

I think you're right about the motor being used as a front brake, but there appears to be a torque arm on the rear left side, so I guess there's a back-pedal brake for the rear.

Yes, could be a Shimano style roller brake within the disc wheel. They get very hot when on the outside and need an extra finned cooling disc on heavier bikes such as e-bikes, so I wouldn't be too keen on one mounted internally.

Doesn't that sound like a recipe for a disaster? Wireless and brakes are two words I definitely don't want to see together!

That makes sense given the wireless spec, but if in both wheels as that reads, it seems likely they'd both be operated together. If that's by back pedalling as "coaster brake" implies, I'd like it even less.

Given what I've seen happen to wireless speedos near some powerful transmitter masts in my area, I certainly would be nervous about riding with wireless brakes round here!

If I've understood the guy from ES correctly, there is indeed a rear coaster brake. The front brake is operated by a remote button that engages the regen on the front wheel and gives moderate braking. However, it's on or off, so not easy to control. I guess it's OK to give drag down steep hills while you do the main braking with the back brake. Doesn't sound like my cup of tea after using Juicy 5 Hydraulics, in fact to me it sounds a bit dodgy for an ebike, but I haven't tried it. Maybe it's adequate after you get used to it
