Hi Martin
You should buy one you've ridden and like and can afford. Unless you have a particularly difficult ride, due to landscape or some personal issue, those are the factors - ride, like, afford.
So find a specialist near you that has a good range to try.

You have my sympathies - we too are based in the Northern Poorhouse, which is vast! Someone may be able to advise - our closest stockist is in Whitby.

Your commute is average, there are lots of choices now for your £1000 budget.
tell us your weight and height. Also check out the Halfords Crossfire+E.

Lots to choose from and making a decision without a local stockist to try them out is always tricky. I can certainly recommend the Woosh Big Bear but I'm sure others are equally happy with their own choices

Your budget will get you a basic hub drive bike.

Peter Darke Cycles in Sunderland has a few Ebco bikes in stock.

I tried one a while ago and thought it was quite good, certainly good value.

the halfords one looks good but out of stock, what about kudos bikes, burisch are they any good

You probably need something with a BPM (or CST) motor for extra torque. Woosh Big Bear or a Kudos Tornado (slightly over budget), depending on which style you prefer.

I agree about the Big Bear - great bike and excellent customer service from Woosh. If you do explore the Big Bear option, given your height, I'd recommend the step-through version (unless you are very supple!)

A front hub motor would even the load on the wheels a bit.

Your weight is no problem for a reasonable quality bicycle.

But a £1,000 ebike will inevitably have cheap components, so evening the stress on the wheels makes sense.

Rob, the Big Bear has been refined over the last two years. How many bikes under £1,200 do you know have forged alloy crankset and SRAM Avid disc brakes? The next batch will feature much better soft grips and sprung seat posts.

Worthwhile improvements.

I was talking generally about wheels, and motor wheels in particular.

It seems to me a budget rear wheel, a powerful motor, and a heavy rider is a risky combination.

Since the combinaton can be avoided by a front hub motor, it makes sense to do so.

A crank drive would, of course, also avoid the risk, but unavailable in within the OP's budget.

An eBay bike fitted with the Bbs01 kit gives cd drive within budget and the chance of a very good donor for £300

Please post when you've picked it up, am really interested in how you find it. I already have the Crossfire 'normal' bike so was looking at the Crossfire eBike.

I'm sure I've mentioned it before but it's worth bringing it up again.

£35 if you're over 18. Still seems like a pretty good deal if you are planning on doing a big purchase at Halfords. Apparently that even includes sale items.
