The front brake on my 806 torque have been going a bit soft lately. It is six months old and I've done 1200 hilly miles in Scotland. Yesterday the brake failed completely. The cable has severed. See picture. Is that normal after 1200 miles? Has it been assembled wrongly. Can I buy a cable and replace it myself or does it have to go back to the shop for repair?

It's a 2 minute job to replace. you can buy a cable in Wilkos for about £2.

Pull the old cable out; thread the new cable though after inserting the nipple in the lever; undo the hex clamp screw on the caliper; thread the cable through it; pull up the lever with the clamp screw on it to take up the slack in the cable; tighten the clamp screw; make fine adjustments with the adjuster screw, which is on the cable next to the caliper.

It's always worth considering swapping it for a hydraulic brake, which costs around £30, is a hundred times better and is even quicker to install than a new cable.
