If not that, then lubricate and exercise the pivots/hinge/etc. Probably lack of use and build-up of dust/grime are involved.

In some of these models, after turning the key you have to press a catch to release the battery. Look for one at the bottom or top.

Try lubricating the lock, if no oil/grease at hand try a HB pencil and rub the lead over the key. Then retry to open the lock fully...
