Mid-drive chain and drive train wear measurements
Just spent a fascinating 30 mins reading this thread. I can remember back to the days when motor cyclists used to take a new chain and put it in an old pan with ep90 gear oil then boil it over a camping stove to get the oil into the pins, then hang it up to drip before wiping with a rag to get off the excess. Not sure how many garden sheds were burnd down by this method. I have done similar with sintered bronze bushes in the centre of my land rover clutch to get oil into them.

Yamaha System randomly turning off
I have a Haibike with a Yamaha system, twice it cut out going up a long hill. When I took it fior it's after sales check over they said it was the battery disconnecting which caused it . I noticed the battery which sits in the frame did not push fully up to the connector at the top so I loosened the screws holding the locking mechanism at the bottom of the battery, then pushed the battery fully up onto the connector using a plastic lever, then I adjusted the locking mechanism up slightly so it now sits fully engaged on the top connector. Had to play around adjusting it until i could get the battery in and out without too much hassle but it seems OK now. Don't know if this helps others but worth a look.

if you want to teach kids how to ride a bike you're supposed to take the pedals off first, and now my mind will never be the same again.
I was of the opinion that those balance bikes were a gimmick another modern parents thing. My grandson had one and then on his birthday he had a pedal bike which he just got on and pedalled off if it wasn't for the phone video I would not have believed it. More proof we need to keep an open mind as we get older.

Comfortable saddle for long distance?
I fully sympathise with you, I have similar problems. One thing which helped me is installing a suntour spring loaded seat post not a total solution by itself but helps. I added a memory foam saddle and the situation is better, but not completely eliminated.

Battery Fires
Of course I agree with the policy of buying reputable and feel that more should be done to close our market to disreputable. Re the cut off I am sure the cable wont warm up much i was actually considering that it be mounted on a small aluminium patch which would be brought into full contact with the battery outer casing, my halfords suntour battery actually warms up very slightly when charging if it was set to trigger 4 or 5 degrees higher I'm sure it would give some protection.

Battery Fires
I'm not an expert but it seems the battery fires while charging are an accelerating runaway process. Would it be so hard to make a power lead with a thermal power cut off which could be strapped to the battery with velcro when on charge? Cut off point to be set at a safe level to try and arrest the problem early. Probably not the perfect solution but another step towards safer charging. I charge mine in the garage sitting the battery on one aluminium plate and the charger on another to act as heat sinks. By the way I missed the announcement the DIY conversation was to be banned, when was that announcement?

Battery Fires
It is very annoying but I think the media have to shoulder the majority of the blame, we can't be sure what the real problem was could be a badly made battery or charger, may be a reputable make which has developed a fault and we need to be vigilant, or could be a battery being charged with the wrong charger. We are not given a clue, but how long before insurance companies stop paying out on fire damage if you own an ebike?

Battery Fires
Saw the news this morning a house destroyed in Doncaster due to e bike battery charging. I'm very sorry for the people who's lives are destroyed in this way, but the news item came across as all batteries are bombs and we will all be killed. Just need a slow news period when Olympics are done, and Andrew has a night in and we could get the full media feeding frenzy demanding e bikes are banned from all buildings and roads.

Are Cheap Chinese Ebikes really that bad
I bought a carera crossfire ebike from halfords in 2017 which has had little use but is maintained and has never seen a wet road. This year I am reviving my interest and in January jumped in and bought a haibike on a special offer. So far my experience is that the halfords bike handles more like a none ebike but the haibike feels a little bit strange, the haibike yamaha system seems to give much more pulling power and range but the crossfire can still manage nearly 40mls, and a new battery can be had for £200 - 250. Gear change on the new bike seems much rougher than the hub drive even though I try to anticipate and change early to reduce stress. The crossfire will actually go into my ford fiesta with seats down and bike front wheel removed which is useful. I recently took it to robin hoods bay and cycled up to Ravenscar then on towards Scarborough, going up the 3 mile slope was just like peddling on a flat road and very enjoyable. All in all I think a well chosen and properly maintained low cost bike could provide a lot of pleasure, certainly there are poor quality chinese imports but I've been watching and it seems to be that prices coming down and spec going up, a bit of a old saying but horses for courses

Bosch power pack 400 rack mount hard to remove
The WD40 people also make a silicone spray which is good for plastic I picked up a small spray when I went into screwfix, it lasts a while and you don't need to use much. Good for the wheel spindle and pedal shafts on grandchildren's pedal car. Found this: Spray

Mobile tool kit
Funnily enough I've got two, but when you own a land rover your garage somehow seems to fill up with tools

Mobile tool kit
Just bought a crank drive this year but yet to size up all the fittings on the bike. My old carrera bike has a hub drive and it's tighten to 40nm so trying to shift that without the correct tools would potentially be a problem, also putting it back without tighten it up correctly could lead to disaster.
