May 21, 20232 yr The budget £1000 e-bikes from Decathlon and Halfords are ok if all you want is a basic e-bike, but they use cheaper components to keep the cost down. which is fine if you aren’t too demanding on them. For example, they use mechanical disk brakes instead of hydraulic because they are cheaper. It depends upon your intended use. If you just want a simple e-bike to get from A to B they will do the job, but if you are looking for a bike to do something more extreme then they are a bit lacking. You then have to weigh up the cost of upgrading components versus buying a higher specification bike in the first place. Edited May 21, 20232 yr by AGS
May 21, 20232 yr The electronics may also be basic , one may get the sketchy speed control type system rather then a nicer current control type system. Often if it is just a simple led with three levels of power then the former, these systems don't give you any control on the power used only the bike speed.
May 22, 20232 yr You then have to weigh up the cost of upgrading components versus buying a higher specification bike in the first place. Ebay is god for this. People are always looking to upgrade their bits, so you can find good quality components, at reasonable prices. Take for example Hope disc brakes. They were always about 170 and end, but older models, which are still very good can be bought for sometimes as little as 40 an end. Stuff like mono mini. Wheels too, rear mechs or shifters even the incidental bits like baars stems etc etc. All yyou need to do is learn what is good and what isnt. It's a bit of an indepth subject, but quality expensive makes even 2nd hand are still quality and worth seeking out.
