I notice tbk has KT controllers for Hailong battery mounts - would that be a possibility ?

It depends which mount. There are three different ones. Also the OEM integrated controllers are potted. The TBK one would be vulnerable if not potted. I think a separate aluminium box type is always a better solution. It gives you a lot more options for size and power.
