What bike would you buy for commute

Featured Replies

I used to commute on a diy bafang motor mtb .I have moved home and don't have the bike anymore .I'm looking for a off the shelf bike to commute to work.Im 55 and comfort and reliability are the most important .I've seen a few vids mostly Chinese bikes and some of them look really good .Ideally something with a fairly big AH battery and isn't going to set on fire . The Bafang motor was bullet proof but it did eat chains and cassettes.

where should I start to look ?

Budget is £2000 -£3000

Thank you

How about letting folks know how far and terrain to be ridden.

Hub bike's are much kinder to drive chain wear and offer a more relaxed riding experience, given if it has nice controller system.

Hello ,country road and dual carriage ways all tarmac .No massive gradients . It would nice if it had a decent set of lights and mudguards .I'd love a fatbike for comfort but a normal mtb would be fine .

What distance/range do you need and how much mass will the bike carry, this will dictate which battery, or batteries may be most suitable.

Both Woosh and Whisper are UK based and sell quality bikes with backup. (based on comments and contributions in here, not direct experience unfortunately).

Most off the shelf branded options however can involve custom parts and systems that dont mix n match with generic freely available parts and spares.

One of the biggest red flags to avoid is systems that boast battery communication, and if an app is even mentioned - RUN!!! - such tech is simply pilling up possible reasons for systems failure..

if you find a bike that takes your eye post a link here for comments..

happy bike shopping ;)

A Wisper bike for a heavier person , they are designed to take heavier riders.

In the Wisper range, the Wayfarer is the one I'd choose. In the Woosh range, it would be the Gran Camino. In the Amazon range, I'd get something like this. The key features to look out for are a separate downtube battery for easily available replacement, all standard Chinese parts, disc brakes and a 48v system for the extra torque you need at 100kg:

Those sort of bikes are all over Amazon and Ebay under different brand names.

Be kind and cut Amazon links at the '?'. Most other links can be cut a lot shorter too.

It one click, and more to aim at. What's the problem? Why should I do extra work to make it harder for anybody, who wants to click? I don't get it.

The extra work makes it harder for the bad guys instead.
