April 28, 20251 yr My Sennheiser RF wireless headphones are ace, but I like using neckband "Sports" bluetooth headphones sometimes, when pottering aound doing physically intensive things, because they don't fall off. Also, on-ear headphones get sweaty. So I thought I'd try listening to my HiFi via bluetooth, bought a couple of these cheapo transmitters, but they are noisy when connected to a USB power supply: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/315356226866 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/364921032300 The good news is, they pair fine. Sound quality is just about bearable with tweaks along the line, but hardly audiophile, but £9 Asda bluetooth neckband earbuds (on sale for £4) can't hold a candle to my seriously wonderfully awesome Sennheiser HD600 of course, but now I know these pair with generic transmitters, I can buy better bluetooth earbuds. https://www.thomann.co.uk/sennheiser_hd_600_new_version_2019.htm ...but there's godawful interference noise from somewhere, when not operating on internal battery... until I bunged these onto the USB power cable: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0DX6LVTFR The seller sent only four instead of five, so I got a 25% refund. Er... that's it, that is all. Edited April 28, 20251 yr by guerney
April 29, 20251 yr Author Oh and the two devices above automatically pair with each other, to transform your better headphones, or whatever else (other hifi, bluetooth speaker) you've plugged in, to bluetooth - simply set one to transmit and the other to receive. The batteries in cheap stuff like this die a quick death, but when that happens they're easy to replace, or they work on external power (hence the importance of low noise) if you rip the batteries out. That really is all. Edited April 30, 20251 yr by guerney
April 30, 20251 yr Author As mentioned often, there's rather a lot of latency when connecting HiFi via bluetooth transmitter to bluetooth headphones, big delay with Asda neckband "Sports" earbuds. However, happily latency is almost negligible when the transmitter is connected to the receiver to Sennheiser HD600. Range is <10M, if there are no obstacles especially. Overall, not a completely awful solution if you wanted to use your posh headphones or other non-bluetooth enabled equipment with newfangled bluetoothed gear, or wanted to make old gear wireless cheaply, while trading away best quality. Headphone out of the receiver can be line-in to something else. Edited May 1, 20251 yr by guerney

Same reason i gave up driving old series land rover (din is above 85db, well in hearing damage range). What's your experience (and how is the slow running, vegetables and life, the universe and everything)?

Heart disease can cause tinnitus too. Must go slow running uphill again in a bit. I've given up growing veg until it starts raining like it used to.

Yes, blood thinners too (sound disappeared so must have been dissociation), give elliptical in gym a go, easier than running (that require core muscle, conscious control, posture and huge amounts of discipline) to establish, stay in comfort zone, heart rate. Does not look like veggy making weather in blighty, I gather it's hot.

I assume ellipses would be too strenuous an exercise utlilising and stressing too many muscles at once. Fast walking would be more appropriate? Or a cadence sensing zero effort bike like mine? When I remember, currently my only pharmaceutical regimen is three raw garlic cloves a day. Must eat less. While slow jogging yesterday, I was overtaken by two small schoolgirls ambling. They weren't sure for ages whether to overtake, clearly I wasn't going to speed up.

Thing is one can transfer point of effort from arms to legs, vice versa and significantly away from both to core, depending what's exhausted and adjust resistance while watching israel and iran bomb each other at 6 am (apologies, this is obvious, but different from say halfway up never-ending hill in teeth of winter with fogged up glasses without escape or respite). And one does not get overtaken. But I am too enthusiastic, its still a pita, and much less meditative (in my cheap gym real risk of bumping into aggravated a holes. I've given up on ebikes, health crap mean I need exercise too much.

June 15, 2025Jun 15 Author frankly, no - but it tones, lots, so one ends up more mesomorph than endomorph, fit better in clothes After many years observing my few hundred customers, the majority of whom have heart disease of various stages... the non-professional conclusion I have come to: Dudes refuse to lose body fat and die, even the ones who exercise to "Tone". If fat isn't shed, you're merely holding back the tide for a time. It's saddening seeing the same error over and over again, but not overly saddening, because none of those dudes are me. Reminds me, must lose more fat. When I remember, currently my only pharmaceutical regimen is three raw garlic cloves a day. ..oh and this ultrafishy oil, plus vitamin D. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/375334993181

It's worth holding in mind that an elliptical trainer is essentially a flight of stairs on which one can change the gradient as one climb - ie mainly a cardiovascular workout (unless one nail it in which case it becomes aerobic). I'm also sure a less self indulgent early retiree than me could in fact lose weight using it (instead of just toning), vitamin d, especially in oily fish is good, also for bones.
June 16, 2025Jun 16 Author israel and iran bomb each other Do you have enough blood thinners stockpiled to survive the nuclear winter? If the answer is "No", it's time to take massive inaction when about to eat, or you'll be just another short-lived liability for the victorious new Illuminati order emerging from bunkers deep near the Earth's core. They rape, cull, and eat the ill. And not necessarily in that order.

I'm with camus' the outsider on this, dying fat and in unbearable agony is inevitable. But there is lots of mileage in following ones own autopilot, regardless of whether it malfunctions. Perhaps something more positive for amazon, like fuck the fear and eat it anyway?

From my point of view at least, my losing fat has been positive, with positive outcomes - I'm no longer pre-diabetic for a start. Stains etc. not necessary, my doc says - he was insisting I needed them prior to fat loss. Whether or not or how you choose to reprogram your autopilot to delay unbearable agony is up to you.

That sounds good, im happy that it is working for you. In truth I'm in an exercise junkie stage, not least to combat some graves disease and pompholyx. And it works. But there is a trite dictum from cbt for bulimia that say avoidance fuels obsession (we think more about the things we try to avoid) and embracing ones destructive impulses/feelings can be helpful.

Its indirect, graves and pompholyx is autoimmune dysfunction triggered by stress (for me), regular exercise relax, distract in ways nothing else does. Good on you for losing the weight. Nothing like a direct health threat to motivate change, I've found.

June 17, 2025Jun 17 Modifying habits to delay pleasure and pain is a often an underdeveloped necessary survival skill. That's true but potentially complex. Easier to delay pleasure and pain one has on some level understood, made peace with, but that can be quite a journey.

A suprisingly large number of people I know are considering taking Ozempic, paying for private if necessary. Self-discipline not required is an attractive prospect, ones undies suddenly being filled randomly and uncontrollably with greasy poos less so. My mentioning this side effect seems to put them off. An acquaintance went with stomach volume reduction surgery (not gastric band) and lost 6 stones. Capacity was reduced to 250ml.

If I were younger (& arrogant) I'd say therapeutic metaphor in there somewhere (trying to dispose of one form of loss of control, mess - ones eating - resulting in another more public experience of loss of control, mess). But as dylan say the human mind can only stand so much ('things have changed'), and my eye is bad today (graves) so all i have is sympathy.
June 18, 2025Jun 18 Author I'm not convinced intense cardio with heart disease is a good idea - precisely what killed poor Douglas Adams. He signed my copy of "So long, and thanks for all the fish" then he was dead. The two events weren't related, it was the gym. And boy was he a fatso.
