September 1, 2025Sep 1 Author Was your eBrompton seized? Nope. Does not look like an e-bike and is legal in any case. No indication they are seizing legal eBikes.

There are auctions of these bikes. There's one today if your quick. https://www.johnpye.co.uk/auctions/general-auction-nottingham-saleroom-2-collection-or-delivery-2/

I do hate unnecessary waste.

There's one today if your quick. https://www.johnpye.co.uk/auctions/general-auction-nottingham-saleroom-2-collection-or-delivery-2/ Yes I thought this was where John Pye was getting all these old used bikes . Does not make much sense the Police Seize them John Pye and other Auctions then sell them , then the Police Seize them and on it goes like going round a mulberry bush . Or maybe people buying them at public auction have large country estates to ride the illegal ones round on . John Pye is Sold as seen no comebacks if you buy defective goods so buyer beware .
September 1, 2025Sep 1 Or maybe people buying them at public auction have large country estates to ride the illegal ones round on . Yes, there are loads of guys on this forum that have large country estates to ride their illegal bikes on. I'm not too sure what they do on them because, for me, it would be a bit boring after the first couple of laps. We get about one of these guys every month, which is a bit weird because there are so many, but I never met one in real life, and they never invite us to ride there, which I think is very selfish.
September 1, 2025Sep 1 It does look odd the complete bike being sold, common sense would see the offending parts removed and binned, and I'd thought there'd be a market for the bike parts that are left, probably not from a big auction house though. Having come from a pedal cycle to a pedelec I'm more than happy with a 250w motor and 25.5 kmph, as however much the kilometres per hour display I can't change without dealer software and a £250 lead annoys me the daily rides are much easier.

I have a friend with a very large estate in Cumbria maybe I could ask her for an illegal bike meet and see has got the biggest motor She married one of the family at Churchills old stately pile too !!!!
September 1, 2025Sep 1 Who who? Twit - Hoo? Hoo? I had an owl woo hooing in my garden last night. It is the females who do the hoo, bit and the males do the twit. I didn't know that until I came to live here. I also regularly have a heron at the bottom of my garden hunting in the river. People say they have seen otters, but I never have. It seems ridiculous that the police confiscate the illegal bikes and then sell them, but the policy is in fact in line with what happens when people drive uninsured cars and can't re-insure them promptly. They get taken and after a short period are sold I think. I suppose that technically the confiscated bikes are just uninsured mopeds in law - unregistered too. There would probably not be anything to stop someone buying one, making sure it fits the type approval regulations for a speed pedelec, and getting it registered and insured - or of course, just swapping out the motor for a legal pedelec one. September 1, 2025Sep 1 People on our posh village feedback group often post pictures of "otters" (the pictures are of rats !) Ha ha ha - I had a similar experience just now. I was driving back from Lanercost Priory where my partner and I went for a coffee at the old priory and a wander around the grounds. It is just along the road about 15 miles over the border in Cumbria, and we were coming back along the winding Gilsland road which runs alongside Hadrian's Wall. At one point we came across a young lad with a big rucksack trying to hitch a lift, so I stopped and picked him up. Turned out he was from Ukraine. He looked to be about 19. I think he had had enough and it was raining. Anyway, as we drove along a grey thing jumped out and ran across the road. 'Ooh look. Squirrel,' says I. Partner said, 'Rat!' I don't know who was right. I think it was me and its tail was just wet, so it looked a bit skinnier than normal. We only just got the grey squirrels up this far north recently and there are not all that many yet. We do have the red squirrels here - mostly in Kielder Forrest which is 250 Sq miles or 650 sq km. They say it is pretty much the biggest reserve of them left in England now.
September 1, 2025Sep 1 There would probably not be anything to stop someone buying one ...............and using it for food delivery services............. wonder if that has ever happened?
September 1, 2025Sep 1 Just watched a Police Officer showing a BBC Wales Reporter one of the illegal Ebikes that could do 80 mph . The rear motor was the size of a dinner plate and he lifted the rear wheel up and used the throttle to show the speed on the bike speedo . I wonder what speed that would equate to when under load ?

We only have grey squirrel’s on Hampstead Heath , I call them foreigners when I explain to my foreign wife that they pushed out all the native squirrel’s . When we go to Vietnam I am the foreigner more and more of us now over there too . But if I invaded on a small boat they would chuck me in jail , and if people try and shoplift the whole street would chase the thief’s down the road and hold them for the police to arrest not film them . It’s a Bit like when I see people nicking Lime Bikes they make a clicking noise as well as the alarm going off , no one BAT’S !! an eye to worried about being stabbed to get involved. But then I suppose it’s a bit of a gateway theft once you have done a couple of Limes or a FOREST you can graduate up to someone’s Giant or go on a TREK . I have always wondered what colour squirrels one might find up a beanstalk or how big the rats are up there .

The rear motor was the size of a dinner plate and he lifted the rear wheel up and used the throttle to show the speed on the bike speedo . I wonder what speed that would equate to when under load ? I have a couple of low powered motorbikes, a 125cc Cg125 and a Honda CB250 twin. They have 11hp and 20 hp respectively, which runs in watts to 8.08kw and 14.7kw. The 8.08Kw bike can just about do 62 miles an hour and the 14.7kw one gets to about 71 if you can wait long enough. It is quite interesting that once you get over about 50 miles an hour in the real world (as opposed to the silly police check world) any increase in speed, needs shed loads more power. There is an exponential element involved in pushing through the atmosphere at increasing speed. These people announcing that a dodgy e-bike can do 70 miles a hour with about 1kw of power are into Star Treck physics. If they had any understanding at all of what they are talking about they'd be embarrassed. You can see the same effect, on steroids in the history of powered flight at speed - the breaking of the sound barrier for example. They were doubling power output to achieve small margins of extra speed. Edited September 3, 2025Sep 3 by Tony1951

The wheel was not spinning at 80 mph. The LCD wasn't setup to show the correct speed. If the wheel speed really was that fast, the motor would run so inefficiently that something would catch fire. The bike's actual top speed on the road would be around 30 mph, and no-load around 40 mph.
September 2, 2025Sep 2 Must have had an Italian tuned Speedometer like on my 2003 Aprilia Leonardo 250 Scooter . Appears to be about 10 mph out and you can`t see it as the MPH Scale has green numbers on a black background .

I think 10 mph would be a good one. Incidentally, all speedometers on cars and motorbikes are optimistic. If you compare with GPS speed, the speedo typically reads from 3mph to 5mph fast. I guess that's so that the manufacturers can't be sued when you get a speeding ticket.

The speedo is bang on accurate. I have only checked it with its digital speedo enabled. I haven't calibrated the analogue one.
