Recommend me a reliable bike for commuting

Featured Replies

Hello, can you recommend me a bike that can do a 30 mile round trip commute that is reliable .It would be nice if it used a belt and not a chain and derailleur so had internal gears either in the hub or motor .

Ideally a mtb with bigger tyres for comfort .

Thank you .

A bit more info would help.

Is it flat? Do you mean every day, 5 days a week? That's a lot of miles. Budget? A bike that will last years, or something cheaper and replaced every year or two? Can you do your own maintenance? Would you consider converting a non-ebike? Does it need to go on trains? How heavy/fit are you? Do you want to put effort in, or cruise at 25km/h with no effort?

Why do you want that? It's going to push your bike into the disproportionately expensive range.

For commuting, all you need is a standard Chinese ebike with a hub-motor that would cost around £750.

The most important point for commuting is where you're going to keep the bike while you're at work. Do you have somewhere secure?

I built a bafang motor and rode it to work 5 days a week for 3 years ,it never really let me down .The reason I would like a bike with no chain is my bafang bike ate chains and cassettes . I was having to replace them every 3 months ish . My journey is reasonable flat not many hills.Ive seen reviews on YouTube for Chinese bikes but finding one with long term reviews isn't easy .

Four options:

If you prefer mid-drive, stick with the Bafang and (1) swap the derailleur etc for in hub gears. Either the more robust versions of relatively low cost Shimano, or expensive but bombproof Rohloff. Or try the Enviolo.

Or (2) given that it is fairly flat and Bafang is quite strong, would single speed work? Would outlast derailleur chains and cogs.

Or (3) hub motor, but has to be front if you want hub gears. Or (4) hub motor, single speed.

Cheap off the shelf bikes don't tend to offer any of these choices.

A bike with a hub-motor would solve all that.
